The annual Game Devs of Color Expo is set to run online for a third year in a row. The event will run September 15-18 2022. The organisers have also registered the event as a nonprofit.
The Game Devs of Color Expo began in 2016 when founders Catt Small and Chris Algoo created the event to showcase games made by people of colour. It was a success, and an annual expo hosting talks, networking events, game demos, and even giving funding has been held every year since.
Since 2020, the Game Devs of Color Expo has been an online event, able to reach more people than ever before. Last year, indie games that we here at TheGamer love got shown, such as Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, and Spirit Swap: LoFi Beats To Match-3 To.
2022’s event promises, speakers from around the world, interviews and annoucements for upcoming games, a Steam event featuring games you can play during and after the expo, networking sessions, a virtual party – hopefully not like the rave in the metaverse – and a grant ceremony where indie devs will recieve no-strings-attached funding for the projects.
As recently highlighted by TheGamer’s own Khee Hoon Chan, even games about people of colour are often made by all white developer teams, so it’s great to see a convention for games made by developers of colour gaining popularity over the years. Video game markets outside of Europe and North America are also seeing record growth, which will hopefully prompt more large companies to consider developers and players of colour more.
The world’s most popular gaming convention, E3, has had its 2022 in-person event cancelled due to the ongoing covid pandemic, but no online replacement has been confirmed yet, despite initial plans to continue the show with physical-digital hybrid events.
E3 2021 saw some interesting trends, however. Notably, the increase in non-violent video games, thanks to the Wholesome Direct, an organisation dedicated to showing off lighter titles.
However, the event also revealed that the term ‘indie’ as it relates to video games is becoming increasing less meaningful – often now simply meaning anything that isn’t triple-A.
