It’s finally time for your Pokémon with perfect natures, stats, abilities, and move lists to see some official, online action – so long as they aren’t on the banned list.

The first online competition for Pokémon Sword & Shield, “Galar Beginnings,” is now underway and the rules, list of banned Pokémon, and competition rewards have all been revealed along with it.

Registration for the competition started on SwSh’s Nov. 15 launch date and ran up until December 5th. The battles themselves began the next day on December 6, and will run for three days. Players are permitted to use teams of 3-6 Pokémon, ranging in level from 1-100. Of course, in the spirit of fairness, all Pokémon are automatically set to level 50 in battle. It is also worth noting, though, that Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing are now fair game, so it would still be wise to choose your companions carefully!

Regarding what Pokémon are and are not permitted, the rule is that only those found within the Galar Pokédex can be used. This is aside from the legendaries, however, who are banned entirely. Yes, this means that Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, and Mew will have to sit tight in their pokéballs another day. Of course, this is usually the case for legendary Pokémon in competitions, so this may not come as much of a revelation.

What may come as a surprise, though, is the reward given to each and every participant. Every player that registered for the competition will be receiving a whopping 50 BP, no questions asked. When you consider the cost of items in the end game Battle Tower BP shop, this is no small amount. Registered players can collect this reward by accessing ‘Mystery Gifts,’ then select ‘Get Battle Stadium Rewards.’

As of yet, no announcements have been made regarding prizes based on players’ competition placements, but getting 50 BP simply for registering seems more than worth that small effort. That said, placing high in the competitions themselves may prove difficult, as players are only allowed to participate in 15 matches per day. If you’re looking to be the very best, then, it’s best to start matches only when absolutely ready.

Even without the legendaries, there are still 400 Pokémon to choose from in Sword & Shield. While there’s no National Dex, you still have a decent amount of options, ranging from great new additions to some older, more familiar faces. Quite a few of the Pokémon in Galar have the ability (or abilities) to carry you through those 15 daily matches.
