It’s been a big day for Pokemon news that has fans cheering the world over. While the first expansion releases today with Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield’s Isle of Armor, it seems that developer Game Freak is already moving towards the next entry in the franchise.

Game Freak announced via the official Japanese twitter account that it is looking for 23 new employees to join the team. The translated line that is getting the most attention is that this team will be focused on the goal to “create a new entry in the Pokemon core series,” but it seems unlikely this core entry will be related to Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Many wonder what the next steps are for a new Pokemon game to follow the wildly successful Sword and Shield games that made their debut on the Switch. Debate has spread online as to what the “core” series refers to in this tweet, and some have quickly latched onto the notion that this next entry will be the long awaited Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl remakes.

The rumor mill has been active for some time now with numerous hints that Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl remakes are in the works with some of the additional content found in the third entry of the generation, Pokemon Platinum. Some fans expected an announcement of the games back in January and just last month fans uncovered the possible names for the Diamond and Pearl remakes.

This tweet comes alongside a day that has been filled to the brim with Pokemon news. The announcement that has garnered the most attention is the new Pokemon Snap. Coming a full 21 years since the original release back on the Nintendo 64, a new entry in the Pokemon Snap series has missed three entire generations of consoles. The game titled New Pokemon Snap is being developed by Bandai Namco who has become quite the development partner with Nintendo properties.

While today’s “Pokemon Presents” has been met with fan adoration, Poke-fanatics won’t have to wait long until the next presentation. The next entry in the Pokemon flavored Directs is coming on June 24. It’s very possible that the debate on what that next “core entry” means might be solved sooner than most would have expected, while rumors suggest it may be also be another Let’s Go duo of games.

As for Pokemon Sword and Shield fans, today is the first step in the expansion adventure as Isle of Armor officially releases. It was just yesterday that news broke that the expansion will introduce level-scaling to Pokemon Sword and Shield for the first time in the franchise.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
