It has been a year since Game of Thrones ended with its anticipated but controversial final season. Though some fans feel that the massively popular fantasy series didn’t stick the landing, it can’t be denied that for several seasons it was one of the best shows around starting with its epic first season.

In Season 1, the show managed to pull off an effective adaptation of George R.R Martin’s first book and hook viewers into this amazing new world. Though the show would only grow in popularity, many of the series’ defining moments come from that first season. Here are the most iconic moments of Game of Thrones Season 1.

10 The Mountain Cuts Down His Horse

Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, was one of the show’s most feared villains thanks to his size and brutality. The show gave viewers a glimpse at how monstrous and strong this man was during the tournament at King’s Landing.

The Mountain faces off with Loras Tyrell in a jousting competition and Loras manages to unseat the much bigger knight. In frustration, The Mountain takes his massive sword and decapitates his horse with one swing.

9 Tyrion’s Confession

It didn’t take long for Tyrion Lannister to become a fan-favorite character on the show. Thanks largely to Peter Dinklage’s perfect performance, Tyrion is a smart, moral, and unlikely hero. He also happens to be one of the funniest characters on the show.

After being arrested for the murder of Jon Arryn, Tyrion is held captive by Lysa Arryn. Following his stay in the dungeons, Tyrion decides to confess. Of course, his confession isn’t about Jon Arryn, but rather all the disgusting things Tyrion has done like putting feces in his sister’s shoes and something involving a donkey, a honeycomb, and a brothel.

8 Ned Stark Versus Jaime Lannister

Though they didn’t get a long time to share the screen, the show managed to establish a pretty effective rivalry between Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister in the first season. After exchanging tense words and veiled threats several times, the two men come face-to-face in a fight.

Jaime and his men surround Ned and his soldiers in the streets and begin killing them. But Jaime wants a fair fight with Ned. It is the tipping point in the battle between Starks and Lannisters. There is also a great moment when Jaime realizes Ned is a stronger match than he thought.

7 The King In The North

When Ned Stark is arrested, his eldest son Robb leads the Northern armies into war against the Lannisters. When Ned is killed, the Northern lords are faced with the question of which king they will follow.

As various choices as suggested, the lords begin to question why they should follow a king they don’t know when they have a true leader among them. One by one, the lords kneels before Robb Stark and proclaim him King in the North in this stirring moment.

6 Ned Confronts Cersei

Ned Stark was an easy hero to like. He was noble and cared for his family, but looking back, he may not have been the smartest strategist. After learning that Robert’s children are actually the spawn of Cersei and Jaime Lannister, Ned decides to confront Cersei with this knowledge to allow her a chance to save her children.

Though it is a simple act of mercy, it seals his fate and shows the audience that heroism can be deadly in this world. As Cersei tells Ned, “In the game of thrones, you win or you die”.

5 Viserys Gets His Crown

Few characters were as despicable in the first season as Viserys Targaryen. The older brother of Daenerys, Viserys was a cruel and malicious man who felt he was owed the Iron Throne, but everyone knew he did not have what it took to rule.

After seeing Daenerys accepted by the Dothraki, Viserys makes the mistake of threatening his sister in the presence of Khal Drogo. In response, Drogo gives Viserys a golden crown he seeks by melting gold and pouring the molten liquid onto Viserys’ head in an agonizing death.

4 The White Walkers Return

Though the first season of the series was praised for focusing more on the complex political aspects of this world, rather than the fantastical elements, the very first scene does throw the audience into the fantasy world.

The series begins with three Night’s Watch rangers scouting for Wildlings. They find a group of them murdered and dismembered. As they try to understand what happened, the White Walkers appear and kill them. It cements the idea that while Westeros fights over the throne, a bigger threat looms.

3 Bran Falls

The first episode of the series does a lot of heavy lifting by introducing the various characters and this complex world. It might feel like that first hour moves a bit slower compared to later episodes, but it does end on a huge moment.

While Bran Stark is climbing one of the towers of Winterfell, he comes across Cersei and Jaime have sex. In an effort to keep the incestuous relationship a secret, Jaime pushes Bran from the tower. It’s a moment that starts Bran’s important journey and ignites the bad blood between the Starks and Lannisters.

2 The Dragons Are Born

Even in the first season of the show, Daenerys has an incredible arc. She begins as this timid young woman who is sold into slavery before becoming a powerful figure in her own right. As it turns out, that was only the beginning of her journey, and the final moments of the first season hint at what’s to come.

After Khal Drogo is dead, Daenerys lights a funeral pyre for her husband places her three dragon’s eggs amongst the flames, then she herself walks into the inferno. The following morning they find her unscathed and cradling three baby dragons.

1 Ned Stark Is Executed

With Sean Bean as the biggest name in the series and with Ned Stark all over the promotional material, fans expected that the character would be around as the series’ lead for a while. But in the penultimate episode of the first season, the show proved that no one was safe.

After being arrested for treason, Ned attempts to confess to the false charges to save his family. But the vile King Joffrey has other plans and has him executed as his daughter Sansa and Arya look on. It remains one of the most shocking television moments of all time.
