There’s a lot of debate and controversy over the finale of Game of Thrones, and the jury is still out on whether or not Daenerys Targaryen should have found herself on the Iron Throne. Regardless of where fans fall in the conversation, she certainly almost became the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

The Mother of Dragons had an impressive streak across Essos and Westeros, throughout which she gained an army and allies and made her way all the way to King’s Landing. However, there are many things she could have done along the way – and especially in her final moments – that could have secured her the throne.

10 If She Didn’t Trust The Witch

Daenerys may have made her first major mistake when Drogo was still alive. Daenerys let the witch Mirri Maz Duur take care of her husband. However, Mirri’s desire for revenge led to the death of Dany’s husband and her child.

It’s really hard to know where Daenerys would have been in Drogo had lived, but she could have definitely been stronger with her husband by her side.

9 If She Didn’t Execute Mossador

Daenerys wanted to make a statement, and she wanted her followers to know that there were consequences for disobeying the rules. However, executing a man sent her backward, and she lost loyalty among people who adored her.

While this didn’t directly affect her position with her actual army, there’s no way of knowing how much it actually decreased their loyalty – and it also only encouraged her ‘mad queen’ reputation.

8 If She Didn’t Send Daario Away

Looking back, Daario was a person of sound mind and could be quite clever and calculating. He called Daenerys out, unlike many of her followers he loved her but saw some of her flaws as well, and he was honest and open about how he thought her rise to power would be troubled.

If she hadn’t sent him away, there’s a strong possibility that he actually would have kept her from the violence and madness that ensued. His loyalty and guidance could have changed everything.

7 If She Didn’t Rescue Jon

One of the most iconic and thrilling moments of the show is when Daenerys swoops in on her dragon to save Jon and his crew from beyond the wall, where they are trapped by white walkers.

Of course, this also results in the death of one of her precious dragon children. Because of this, the Night King also takes the dragon for his own. It’s not to say that the dragons are her key to success, but she probably would have had a much better shot at being the hero who saved Westeros without a dragon against her.

6 If She Listened To Olenna

Daenerys forms an alliance with House Tyrell, and listens to Olenna’s council. However, she also ignores a large part of her advice – which results in her army being decimated in Highgarden.

Beyond that, if she had taken King’s Landing earlier – like Olenna suggested – she might have had a better chance at less bloodshed and better victory.

5 If She Didn’t Listen To Tyrion (As Much)

Tyrion was a great hand, and he’s inarguably one of the most intelligent characters in the entire series. However, he also vastly underestimated his sister, Cersei.

If Daenerys had trusted her own gut and didn’t believe in Tyrion’s faith in Cersei, there’s a much larger chance she wouldn’t have ended up setting King’s Landing on fire.

4 If She Didn’t Underestimate Euron

Daenerys brushes the Iron Fleet to the back of her mind, but they never lose sight of her as their target. To her horror, Euron and his fleet corners them at Dragstone, and they end up capturing Missandei, killing a dragon, and severely hamstringing her army.

Missandei’s death and this crucial setback drove her further into her anger, and it also worsened her position in the battle for the throne.

3 If She Didn’t Love Jon

Her relationship with Jon is not only super controversial to fans, but it’s also really the only thing keeping Daenerys’ heart ahead of her mind. Her loyalty to Jon puts her in a tough position.

When she discovers that Jon is a Targaryen, things become even more complicated. Her adoration for Jon Snow occasionally blinds her in her quest for the crown.

2 If She Was More Self Aware

This seems pretty basic, but it’s actually a really important point to her rise and fall. Daenerys iconically stated that she wanted to “break the wheel”, yet she really only tried to replace it.

She didn’t realize she was more similar to Cersei than anyone else. She wanted power and she wanted to rule – she did cruel things and she wanted people to follow and fear her. If she acknowledged this and changed this, she might have had more loyalty and better motivations.

1 If She Didn’t Burn Everything

Daenerys’ descent into becoming the mad queen was foreshadowed throughout the series, but no one expected the haste in which she decided to burn King’s Landing and the Red Keep right to the ground.

This is the turning point for her followers, and especially for Jon Snow. It’s because of this that Jon realizes she cannot be queen, and he kills her for it. She could have certainly been queen had she not destroyed what she was always fighting for.
