Game of Thrones 5 Times Tywin Lannister Was An Overrated Character (& 5 He Was Underrated)

Tywin Lannister is one of the most interesting characters in Game of Thrones. Lord Tywin is infamous in Westeros for his treatment of the Reynes of Castamere, with a young Tywin destroying the House Reyne for its disrespect of House Lannister, leading to the creation of the Rains of Castamere song.

Tywin Lannister (played magnificently by Charles Dance) is one of the most calculated and cunning characters in Westeros, with the character plotting the Red Wedding and, essentially, ending the War of Five Kings.

10 Overrated: Defense of Blackwater

Game of Thrones 5 Times Tywin Lannister Was An Overrated Character (& 5 He Was Underrated)

This was made clear in the books, but Tywin Lannister received most of the credit for defeating and repelling Stannis Baratheon during his attack on King’s Landing. While Tywin certainly played his part, there is no denying that without Tyrion’s tactics the city would’ve fallen before Lord Tywin even reached the city.

Perhaps this was due to Tyrion’s unpopular image among King’s Landing, but it is certainly overrating Tywin to give him sole credit for the defense of King’s Landing.

9 Underrated: Relationship With Jaime

Jaime Lannister was Tywin’s favorite son and heir to Casterly Rock. However, despite the fact that Jaime gave up his claim on Casterly Rock when he vowed to join the Kingsguard, Tywin kept trying to persuade Jaime to break his vows.

This only led to strife with Jaime and Cersei, with the latter irritated by the fact that she had not been given Casterly Rock despite being more than suitable.

8 Overrated: Ability On The Battlefield

Game of Thrones 5 Times Tywin Lannister Was An Overrated Character (& 5 He Was Underrated)

There is no denying that Tywin Lannister is one of the most intimidating, clever, and devious characters on the show. It was Tywin who orchestrated the Red Wedding, who sacked King’s Landing during Robert’s Rebellion, and helped defeat Stannis at Blackwater.

However, despite all of this, his ability on the battlefield has been greatly exaggerated. This was shown very clearly by the Lannister defeats by the Young Wolf Robb Stark.

7 Underrated: His Dislike Of Tyrion

Tyrion Lannister often receives poor treatment due to his dwarfism. It is partly due to this disability that, despite Jaime Lannister’s Kingsguard vow, Tywin Lannister never made Tyrion heir to Casterly Rock, though it should have been his by right.

In addition to his dwarfism, Tywin also despised Tyrion because his wife, Joanna Lannister, died giving birth to him.

6 Overrated: Judge Of Character

Tywin’s intelligence is often seen as his most identifying feature, with the Lord of Casterly Rock and Hand of the King being seen as one of the most competent and intelligent people in all of Westeros.

However, despite this, Tywin didn’t suspect Olenna Tyrell and Petyr Baelish of Joffrey’s murder, instead accusing Tyrion before then being shot by his own son on the toilet.

5 Underrated: Impact On Cersei

Cersei Lannister was one of the best characters in the show. Over the course of 8 seasons, the audience saw how she changed from being used as a bargaining chip in marriage pacts to actually becoming ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

Much of what drives Cersei is her desire to emulate her father’s success and prove herself to him. However, Cersei lacked the emotionless engine that Tywin seemed to possess.

4 Overrated: Evil Nature

Game of Thrones 5 Times Tywin Lannister Was An Overrated Character (& 5 He Was Underrated)

Due to the fact that Tywin Lannister was behind the ruthless Red Wedding, fans of the show may be led to believe that Tywin is an evil character, placing the former Lord of Casterly Rock closer to that of Joffrey and Ramsay.

However, this is not the case. Tywin made these decisions with pragmatism in mind and took no pleasure out of carrying them out.

3 Underrated: His Love For His Wife

Game of Thrones 5 Times Tywin Lannister Was An Overrated Character (& 5 He Was Underrated)

This was played down more for the TV series, but in the books it was made very clear. It is frequently said that Tywin’s love for his late wife, Joanna Lannister. It was said that while Tywin Lannister ruled the Seven Kingdoms, Lady Joanna ruled Lord Tywin.

After Joanna Lannister died giving birth to Tyrion, his character changed into something for more closed and cold than it had before, with Gerion Lannister even saying that the best part of Tywin died with his wife.

2 Overrated: His Cunning

Tywin Lannister is without doubt a Machiavellian character, capable of making cunning, devious plans that are devoid of honor in order to further his ends and make House Lannister even more powerful.

While this is certainly true, it isn’t necessarily something Tywin will do for the sake of it. In the case of the Red Wedding, Tywin’s hand was forced by his inability to defeat Robb Stark in battle.

1 Underrated: As A Ruler

Tywin Lannister was always shown to be a ruthless leader, capable of underhanded and brutal methods in order to win his wars and enact his will. However, while this is true, one shouldn’t overlook his ability to rule.

This was played down slightly in the TV show, but in the books it is clear that Tywin Lannister knows how to rule well and tries to explain this to Joffrey, saying:
