Robb Stark is one of the most heroic characters from the early days of Game Of Thrones, or at least has heroic intentions. A lot of the show’s conflicts are more complicated than good guy vs bad guy, but after Joffrey needlessly beheads Ned Stark, it falls to Robb (and Catelyn) to rescue Sansa and Arya and free the North from the tyranny of Joffrey’s rule.

The unofficial King in the North is arguably on the most righteous side of the war of the 5 kings, and despite being relatively green to matters of war he soon proves to be almost as ruthless and effective a tactician as Tywin Lannister. As a Stark, he doesn’t mince words, and as a King, he doesn’t beat around the bush. Here are Robb Stark’s most iconic quotes from the show.

Despite some bloodthirsty advice from Theon Greyjoy, Robb initially holds off on marching straight to war. He takes his new responsibilities very seriously, leaves emotion out of it, and selflessly prioritizes the lives of his family and people, the way Ned Stark would’ve wanted. But when Joffrey summons Robb to King’s Landing to swear allegiance, Robb realizes what must be done and calls the banners.

9 If we do it your way, Kingslayer, you’d win. We’re not doing it your way.

It must be embarrassing to have a position of authority in Westeros and not be one of the finest swordsmen in the land. Like Jon Snow later does with Ramsey Bolton, a captive Jaime Lannister tries to talk Robb into a one on one duel to settle the families’ differences and save the bloodshed. Knowing he’d definitely lose the fight, Robb refuses. There aren’t many ways to respond to that without losing face but Robb just about manages it.

8 It’s better than three defeats.

Everyone is surprised by the effectiveness of Robb Stark’s campaign, winning his first 3 battles and capturing Jaime Lannister, as well as rallying the North behind him. (Though he did have to sacrifice 2000 men in the process) While he’s at that age where such a winning streak could make him feel invincible and become less careful, The King In The North easily shut down Jaime’s “three victories don’t make you a conqueror”, and Jaime starts to sound like the jumped-up firstborn…

His time on the show was short-lived, but Ned Stark’s character remains just as significant throughout the show’s run, and he lives on through his children in a way few shows manage to portray. Like Jon Snow, every decision Robb makes is measured up to what his father would’ve done.

Robb is a skilled warrior, but it’s this kind of thoughtfulness that sets him apart from other male leaders. His decision to marry for love and break a promise to a potential ally is beneath the integrity of his father, but it’s hard to imagine it not putting a smile on Ned’s face, while it lasts at least.

There’s a lot more to winning a war than the numbers, or the skill of your warriors, particularly when the transport available to most of the population maxes out at 1 horsepower. Even without the events of the Red Wedding, the long miserable marches and complete loss of momentum may well have spelled the end for Robb anyway, something he was well aware of.

Poor Edmure was only trying to help, but the scene between him and Robb shows the King in the North at his most kingly. Despite Blackfish’s objections, Robb doesn’t flinch at being referred to as ‘nephew’. He hears Edmure out, then punishes him merely by shutting him down and explaining why what he did was wrong. Some might call him too soft, but if every leader was like Robb there’ wouldn’t be any conflict in the first place.

“He’d do whatever was right, no matter what.” Jon Snow once said of Ned Stark. But what does that actually mean? The problem arises when you’re a good guy, and the bad guy’s going to win unless you sink to their level. Robb’s decision to behead Rickard Carstark and take his own mother prisoner may have seemed righteous and unselfish, but both were huge steps backward in terms of his larger goal.

Robb’s treatment of the Lannister messenger is another shining example of his great leadership, treating the guest courteously with food and somewhere to sleep. And when he drops this badass message to be delivered to Tywin, you can see in his eyes that he’s not just Ned Stark’s angry son anymore.

Tywin may not have been pushed to such unscrupulous methods to win if Robb hadn’t been so cocky or garnered such a fierce reputation, but then results-oriented thinking is always 20/20.

Not for long though right? So maybe Robb did punish Edmure a little, and if anything he got lucky that Edmure screwed up tactically so there was some obligation for Edmure to pitch in. Even with the Mountain’s head on a spike (something Eddie Hall is currently working towards) Robb still would have needed to offer Edmure to the Freys.

Despite Robb’s victories and the passion of his men, he basically has one shot with the army he’s assembled as he can’t afford to play the long game if he suffers heavy casualties. Ultimately Tywin wins through patience, gold, and knowing the right people.
