Game Of Thrones What Happened To Septa Unella After Season 6

What happened to Septa Unella after Game Of Thrones season 6? George R.R. Martin’s sprawling fantasy epic book series A Song Of Ice And Fire began in the 1990s and is still running. Martin’s novels are filled with rich characters and worldbuilding, in addition to shocking twists and deaths. The scope of the books seemed way beyond anything a TV series could handle, but HBO’s adaptation proved that assumption incorrect. The show began in 2011 and over the years became one of the biggest series – in terms of both popularity and scope – in the world.

The first six seasons of Game Of Thrones made for must-see television, but the decision to wrap up the story with two shortened series proved to be a mistake in hindsight. Seasons 7 and 8 rushed to the finish, abruptly wrapping long-brewing storylines and putting a focus on impressive setpieces over character. While these final seasons undoubtedly had some great sequences and performances, they largely proved disappointing to long-time fans for how sloppy the storytelling became.

Game Of Thrones had some truly memorable villains, from the loathsome King Joffrey to Ramsay Bolton. Septa Unella joined those ranks in season 5 and she was a devout member of the Faith of the Seven. She was assigned by the High Sparrow to oversee Queen Cersei’s confession after they arrest her for suspected incest with her cousin. Septa Unella may have been a stern character but she clearly enjoyed tormenting and humiliating Cersei, and famously rang a bell and accompanied the Queen on her naked “Walk of Atonement” through King’s Landing, shouting “Shame! Shame!” throughout.

The finale of Game Of Thrones season 6 saw Cersei claim her revenge on the High Sparrow and his followers by blowing up the Great Sept with wildfire. She also made good on her threat to Septa Unella that hers would be the last face she ever saw. She has Unella tied to a table and waterboards her with wine, “confessing” her sins before introducing her to undead henchmen Ser Gregor Clegane. Cersei closes the crypt door shouting “Shame! Shame!” as Unella is heard screaming.

The series leaves Septa Unella’s fate up to viewers to decide, though the one certain thing is she didn’t survive. If Clegane didn’t kill her between seasons, she would have died when the Red Keep itself was destroyed in Game Of Thrones’ final season. Septa Unella actress Hannah Waddingham later spoke about the scene on Vanity Fair podcast Still Watching, revealing the original sequence was supposed to feature a sexual assault by Clegane, though the showrunners changed this at the last moment due to fear of viewer backlash. The actress also described filming the scene as one of the worst days of her life, as she was essentially waterboarded by grape juice for hours on end and blew out her voice from a deleted moment where The Mountain put his hand over her mouth.
