On the continent of Westeros, there is no House more associated with honor than Stark. In the North, as in most of the Seven Kingdoms, it’s the bonds of honor that keep the various noble families from tearing each other apart, but the Starks take it to another level. From the moment that they appear in Game of Thrones, honor remains their guiding light in most of their actions, often to their regret.
Thinking about the Stark family through the lens of the zodiac sheds light on both their personalities and the reasons that they do the things they do. So without further delay, here are all the members of House Stark, sorted according to which zodiac sign they best align with.
12 ARIES: Later Sansa
Sansa has one of the more intriguing storylines in the series. Though she begins as a rather naive young woman yearning for romance, tragedy and trauma gradually harden her until she becomes a ruthless and cunning ruler in her own right.
The later Sansa has a great deal in common with the ram, which is a determined sign that is not easily mastered. It is therefore absolutely fitting that, by the end of the show, Sansa has become Queen of the North in her own right.
11 TAURUS: Ned
Ned (so memorably portrayed by Sean Bean) is one of the most admirable and yet frustrating member of House Stark. Driven by his own sense of nobility and justice, he often refuses to take advice from people that know more than he does.
Exhibiting all of the stubbornness of the bull, he ultimately charges headlong into a political catastrophe when Robert is killed. Rather than joining with Renly, he allows his foolish and stubborn sense of pride lead him to his own death.
10 GEMINI: Lyanna
Though she only appears very briefly in the television adaptation (not surprising, considering that she’s been dead for quite a while by the time that it begins), Lyanna is still a pivotal character. After all, it is her romance with Rhaegar that gives birth to one Jon Snow.
As a Gemini, Lyanna is a person that is impulsive in the extreme, often doing things without fully thinking through their consequences. Thing is, Game of Thrones made it clear that it’s precisely these kinds of decisions that can lead a kingdom to war.
9 CANCER: Jon
As a water sign, the Cancer is one of the more compassionate and emotional of the zodiac signs. Jon Snow, one of the series’ most popular characters, exhibits many of the traits of this sign, both for the positive and the negative.
On the positive side, he has a rich emotional life, one that leads him to form strong bonds with those that he loves. On the negative side, those emotions often lead him into doing things that lack all sense (to anyone except him).
8 LEO: Robb
As the eldest son of Ned and Catelyn, it makes sense that Robb would exhibit many of the signs of the powerful and dominant Leo. After all, he’s been raised since birth to step into his father’s shoes.
However, after his father’s death he also exhibits some of the other signs of the lion, seizing the opportunity to have himself declared King of the North. He has a natural leadership ability, though unfortunately he tends to be impulsive, often to his detriment.
7 VIRGO: Benjen
The younger brother of Ned, Benjen is something of an enigma for much of the series. What the viewer learns about him, however, is that he is often a calm and sensible man.
This is why it makes sense that he would seek out a career as a member of the Night’s Watch at the Wall rather than trying to make his fortunes as a second son. He proves himself to be an extremely capable leader of men.
6 LIBRA: Early Sansa
When the viewer first meets Sansa, she is a young woman who yearns for the excitement of court life. It actually takes her a surprisingly long time to learn the bleaker truths about the world that she lives in, and her journey to this realization is a key narrative point in the first several seasons.
It is precisely her idealism-her willingness to believe in a more beautiful and splendid world than the one that she lives in-that makes her such a Libra.
5 SCORPIO: Arya
There’s no question that, of all the Starks, it is Arya who fits most neatly into the category of the Scorpio. Anyone who’s ever met a Scorpio knows that it is a very bad idea indeed to get on their bad side, considering the fact that they can be vengeful and resentful in the extreme.
Arya takes this to new levels, considering the fact that she travels to Braavos to learn the arts of assassination, all while keeping a running tally of those that she wants to kill stored in her brain.
4 SAGITTARIUS: Catelyn
The Sagittarius is one of the more independently-minded zodiac signs, and this is one of the key traits that we see in Catelyn, Ned Stark’s wife and the mother of his children. This is a source of strength for her, since it allows her to survive a lot of traumas that would have undone a lesser woman.
At the same time, there’s also a philosophical core to this sign, and there’s no question that Catelyn is one of the series’ more thoughtful characters. However, sometimes her overthinking gets lots of people in trouble.
3 CAPRICORN: Bran
Bran is one of the series more enigmatic characters, and this becomes ever more true as the series goes on. However, like a good Capricorn, he shows again and again that he is both determined and practical, otherwise he would never have been able to survive the fall of Winterfell and his journey north.
At the same time, he is also a deeply sensitive child, and it is for this reason, perhaps, that he proves such a natural for magic and sorcery.
2 AQUARIUS: Lyanna
Unpredictability and idealism are two of the key character traits of the Aqaurius. While these aren’t necessarily bad things in and of themselves, they can lead to some sticky situations if the Aquarius isn’t careful to keep those impulses tempered and in check.
That’s certainly true of Lyanna who, in her youthful idealism, commits a rather unpredictable action and elopes with Rhaegar, disregarding the political consequences that such a marriage was likely to produce.
1 PISCES: Robb
The Pisces is, arguably, the most sensitive sign in the zodiac. Unfortunately, this also means that they are prone to being a little self-indulgent and to letting their feelings guide their actions when it would be better to be a little more rational.
Robb, notoriously, allows this to happen when he disregards his arranged marriage to a Frey and instead marries a foreign nobody. It’s noble in its own way, but it’s the one action that arguably dooms all of his efforts to be the King in the North.
