The only game to ever receive a perfect score in Famitsu magazine that never received an English release is finally being released in the west, in the form of a remake. 428: Shibuya Scramble will finally be seeing an English release on PC and PlayStation 4 nearly a decade after its original release on the Nintendo Wii.

Famitsu is one of Japan’s most prestigious gaming magazines. They are notorious for being incredibly strict when giving out perfect scores, of which only twenty-five have been given out since the magazine debuted in 1986.

428: Shibuya Scramble was developed by Chunsoft and published by Sega. It was released in 2008 on the Nintendo Wii and went on to become the ninth game to ever receive a perfect 40/40 score in Famitsu. The game is a visual novel that follows five different characters who become involved in a kidnapping plot. The player has ten hours in which to solve the mystery, which requires seeing the events unfold from the perspective of each of the characters.

Despite all of the acclaim that 428: Shibuya Scramble saw in its native Japan, the game never saw an international release, even though the Nintendo Wii was a popular system across the globe. The reason 428: Shibuya Scramble never saw a release was likely due to the fact that it is a visual novel. The game also has a lot of references to a previous Chunsoft title, called Machi, which also never saw an international release.

The changing attitude towards visual novels in the west was likely a major factor in 428: Shibuya Scramble finally seeing an English localization. We have Steam to thank for this, as visual novels have thrived on the platform over the past few years.

The most recent game to earn a perfect score in Famitsu magazine is Dragon Quest XI. This game has also yet to see an English release, but one was announced shortly after the Japanese release of the game. The only reason we can’t play it yet is due to Square Enix taking forever with their localization of the game.

428: Shibuya Scramble is due to be released for the PlayStation 4 and PC this summer.
