As technology has improved over the past decades, exposure to digital screens has increased drastically, and with it, also blue light waves. As blue light can be problematic in the maintenance of proper sleep cycles, one company seeks to provide not only a solution, but also awareness to the long-term effects for both youth and adults.

Gamer Advantage is a US-based company that produces lenses meant to counter blue light, specifically at the key wavelengths that are coming off the screens. This can disrupt the regulated production of melatonin and using digital devices at night is most often when this disruption occurs, falsely signaling to the brain that one is outside in the sun, causing the body to feel awake and making it difficult to get to sleep. Other side effects commonly associated are eye pain or discomfort, dry eyes, headache, and blurred vision.

Of course, the level of exposure from a screen compared to the sun is relatively small, yet the concern is that long-term exposure of close-proximity use, which is how most people use their digital devices, can add up. According to a study funded by the American National Eye Institute (NEI), children’s eyes absorb more blue light than adults from these screens.

Therein lies a major focus for Gamer Advantage, as company Founder Bryan Reedy describes efforts to speak with high schools and promote the idea of having all students wear their lenses. Reedy makes the comparison of using these lenses to block blue light to athletes who wear protective padding and helmets. The equipment is not meant to be used to repeatedly traumatize the body, but to prevent long-term damage and injury.

As today’s youth and future generations will undoubtedly be increasingly connected to digital devices in their education, leisure, and future professional lives, it makes complete sense to treat our eyes with the same care that we would our bodies when engaging in physical conditioning. The real question now is why to bother with lenses from Gamer Advantage over the myriad of yellow glasses available for purchase elsewhere.

Reedy is clear in his stance on most other products on the market, consisting mainly of yellow lenses that make unrealistic claims. At times the yellow tint is added for aesthetic, because that is the old-fashioned approach to “blocking” blue light. However, those yellow lenses create a major color distortion for the wearer.

While other companies seem to make claims that cannot be supported, Gamer Advantage lenses rely upon a 2017 Medscape study from the Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry. This independently conducted study had participants use these lenses and after five days, there was a 96% increase in melatonin levels, less awakening during sleep, and improved cognition using pattern comparison test.

Gamer Advantage has one more differentiator. Most blocking lenses are non-prescription. Gamer Advantage has a proprietary process to serve those with prescription needs. And since they have no color distortion, they can be used as normal eyewear.

It will be interesting to see future studies conducted on the matter, because as few could have predicted how prevalent digital screens have become in our lives a mere ten or twenty years ago, the impact on our eyes is only recently coming to light. At the very least, it is great to see Bryan Reedy raising awareness in today’s youth.
