GameStop claims that the augmented reality game Pokemon GO has caused a significant boost in sales and foot traffic at stores that have been designated PokeStops and Gyms.

People and organizations have been using Pokemon GO in some pretty interesting, and profitable ways; it’s been confirmed that McDonald’s is partnering with the app, high level players are selling their accounts on eBay, and the game has even created a demand for Pokemon GO chauffeurs. Well GameStop can now be added to the list of businesses that have benefited from the hugely popular augmented reality game.

In an interview with CNBC, GameStop CEO Paul Raines said that hundreds of GameStop locations have been designated as PokeStops and Gyms and those locations have been seeing increased business as a result. “We surveyed our stores, and we had 462 stores just this past weekend that are Pokemon Stops or Poke Gyms, so we did some family events and our sales were up 100 percent in those stores,” claimed Raines.

The game has also caused a significant boost in the sale of Pokemon merchandise, which according to Raines makes GameStop the largest distributor of Pokemon games and collectibles in the world. “We’re very happy to see all this excitement around Pokemon in what is traditionally a slower time of the year for video games,” Raines said.

Businesses and retailers have been seen using lure items to attract potential customers, but it has not been confirmed that GameStop has employed similar methods. While GameStop has no way to directly profit from Pokemon GO, the company does sell iTunes gift cards, which could be purchased by players to make in-app purchases of various items to aid in their hunt for Pokemon.

Businesses aren’t the only ones trying to use Pokemon GO to their advantage, this week it was reported that police in England were trying to use the promise of a Charizard to lure fugitives out of hiding. While that particular strategy has yet to see any kind of success it can’t be denied that Pokemon GO is becoming very profitable, especially for Nintendo since Pokemon GO is now responsible for 50% of daily mobile purchases.

While it is unclear if Pokemon GO will continue to expand its partnerships with businesses in the future, Niantic did just announce that it is taking requests for new Gym and Poke Stop locations, which will surely cause many business to attempt to snag one of these coveted locations for themselves.
