Gaming Detail A Trainer In Pokémon Yellow Cannot Approach The Player (Due To A Glitch)

Though the first generation of Pokémon games are notable for their glitches, there is one near the beginning of Pokémon Yellow that many fans never noticed, as one of the trainers in Viridian Forest cannot approach the player for a battle.

In the Pokémon series, the player must make their way through the world and battle enemy trainers. According to the in-game explanation, trainers must battle if they lock eyes. In mechanical terms, this means that crossing the path of an enemy that is facing the player will cause a battle to occur. The enemy trainer will then move toward the player and engage them in battle. This movement led to several notable glitches, including one that is a key component in encountering Mew within Misty’s Gym.

There are some trainers in the first generation of Pokémon games that need to be talked to before they can be battled, such as the Gym Leaders or members of the Elite Four. There’s also one trainer in Pokémon Yellow who also needs to be talked to before battle, but this due to a glitch.

Once the player reaches Viridian Forest in Pokémon Yellow, they can battle enemy Pokémon trainers for the first time. In the bottom-left corner of the map (near the entrance), there is a patch of tall grass with a Lass standing in the center. However, it looks like Game Freak might’ve screwed up the sprite for the Lass, as she was placed on top of the grass, instead of among it. This means that the Lass cannot move and will not approach the player for a battle, even if they cross her eye line. The only way to battle her is by talking to her first.

Pokémon Red & Green and Pokémon Red & Blue were some of the glitchiest games of their era, and Pokémon Yellow made great strides in improving the quality of its generation. The immovable Lass is just a minor oversight, especially when compared to the games that bore the famous MissingNo.
