Zoe Saldana was the perfect actor to bring Gamora’s pathos, sharp wit, badass attitude, and underlying humanity to the screen.

Although Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Thor have taken center stage throughout the Infinity Saga, Gamora played a huge role as both a Guardian of the Galaxy and a daughter of Thanos. So, here are 5 Gamora quotes that made us laugh out loud, and 5 that broke our hearts.

10 Funniest: “I Am Going To Die Surrounded By The Biggest Idiots In The Galaxy.”

What first brings the Guardians together is their prison break. When they’re all locked in the Kyln, they hatch a plan to escape, get the Orb back, and sell it to the Collector.

On the way out of the prison, when the plan goes awry, Gamora says, “I am going to die surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy.” The Biggest Idiots in the Galaxy would actually be a good alternative title for Guardians of the Galaxy, but the latter is snappier, because it’s alliterative.

9 Most Heartbreaking: “Swear That If Thanos Comes For Me, You’ll Kill Me. Swear On Your Mother.”

In Avengers: Infinity War, when the coming of Thanos becomes apparent to the Guardians of the Galaxy following their encounter with Thor, Gamora gravely tells Quill, “Swear that if Thanos comes for me, you’ll kill me. Swear on your mother.”

This line is even more heartbreaking in rewatches of Infinity War. Thanos does manage to capture Gamora, and Quill actually builds up the courage to keep his promise, and thanks to the Reality Stone, it turns out to be futile.

8 Funniest: “Who Put The Sticks Up Their Butts?”

When Peter Quill tells Gamora the Earth legend of Footloose, he describes a gallant hero named Kevin Bacon who taught “an entire city full of people with sticks up their butts” that dancing is the greatest thing in the world.

But Gamora misses the point, as she’s confused by Quill’s turn of phrase and asks him, “Who put the sticks up their butts?” Quill tries to explain what he meant by “people with sticks up their butts,” but Gamora still isn’t getting it. She says, “That is cruel.”

7 Most Heartbreaking: “Everything I Hate About Myself Comes From You.”

The most tragic element of Gamora’s characterization is her upbringing. Thanos brought his wrath to her planet and then abducted her to raise as a killing machine. He succeeded in making her a killing machine, but as she tells him in his throne room in Avengers: Infinity War, she’s not happy about that.

When he continually refers to her as his daughter, she angrily tells him, “I am not your daughter! You didn’t raise me, you kidnapped me, orphaned me, and imprisoned me! Everything I hate about myself comes from you.”

Gamora really has a way with words. As the Guardians wait for the Collector to meet with them and make an offer for the Orb, Quill takes her out onto a balcony and they look out at a gorgeous cosmic landscape.

As soon as Gamora realizes that Quill wants to seduce her, she takes out one of her swords, presses it to his throat, and tells him, “I know who you are, Peter Quill, and I am not some starry-eyed waif here to succumb to your pelvic sorcery!”

A common theme in the MCU is finding a surrogate family in the people around you. Every Guardian of the Galaxy was an outsider before finding companionship with each other.

As the Guardians head into the final battle to save Xandar at the end of their first solo movie, Gamora tells her teammates, “I have spent most of my life surrounded by my enemies. I will be grateful to die among my friends.”

When Peter Quill first encounters his biological father, Ego, he’s a little apprehensive. But Gamora encourages him to get to know his father.

She asks him Zardu Hasselfrau and his magic boat, meaning David Hasselhoff, who Quill used to tell the other kids was his father, and his talking car from Knight Rider. However, her point about giving Ego a chance still stands: “What if this man is your Hasselhoff?”

3 Most Heartbreaking: “You Will Always Be My Sister.”

After they were adversaries throughout the first Guardians movie, Gamora and Nebula were brought together in the second. Of course, Nebula was trying to kill Gamora for most of the movie, as usual. But when they realized they just wanted to kill each other because Thanos conditioned them to, they came together as sisters.

Gamora offers Nebula a spot on the Guardians team, but she decides to go after the Mad Titan instead. So, Gamora hugs Nebula and tells her, “You will always be my sister.”

2 Funniest: “We’re Just Like Kevin Bacon!”

Peter Quill has told the story of Footloose to all of the other Guardians at this point, and due to their lack of reference points, they’ve all missed the point of it.

One thing they can all agree on is that Kevin Bacon is a hero in the story. Now, whenever the Guardians do anything heroic, they think of that noble warrior, Kevin Bacon.

One of the great things that James Gunn did with Quill and Gamora’s relationship was not forcing them to get together in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Instead, he let the romance grow organically. Gamora wasn’t a “prize” for the hero, like the love interests in most superhero blockbusters. Quill had to grow up before Gamora would date him.

And it meant that when they first said they love each other – as Quill was struggling to keep his promise to kill Gamora if she ever gets captured by Thanos – it was a lot more emotionally resonant. Given the circumstances, it was heartbreaking, too.
