Garou: Mark of the Wolves, the final installment of the Fatal Fury series that released in 1999, was ported to the PC, PS4, and Vita back in 2016. While the emulation was decent enough, it sported some truly abysmal netcode that made online play practically impossible. This was a far cry from the Xbox 360 version released nearly a decade prior, which had competent enough online. Through some kind of crazy magic, this now four-year-old port just got updated with improve netplay.

As revealed by Code Mystics on its Twitter account, rollback netcode is now live on all modern versions of Mark of the Wolves. Bringing the game into the modern era, this update actually makes it run smoothly online. You won’t always have a perfect match, mind you, but this now makes grabbing the port a no-brainer.

Mark of the Wolves is considered by many to be the best fighter SNK has ever created. It came out towards the end of the Neo-Geo’s life cycle and is almost like an answer to Capcom’s Street Fighter III: Third Strike. Featuring similar systems and mechanics, it introduces a mostly new cast with characters that have yet to see a return in other games (save for Terry Bogard and Rock Howard).

With this new update, it’s now the perfect time to jump into Mark of the Wolves. A small 10% discount is currently running on Steam for the Steam Lunar New Year Sale, but the game is completely worth a $9 price-tag. It’s an endlessly engaging fighter with beautiful visuals, creative characters, and a lot of depth. If you fancy yourself a fighting game connoisseur, you owe it to yourself to try this out.

If for some reason you’d prefer to run the original version, that is an option. As noted in the embedded Tweet, you’ll just need to right-click on Mark of the Wolves in your Steam library and opt into the “dotemuversion” from the Betas tab. I wouldn’t recommend that since the original PC port was a bit janky. It featured a ton of frame stutter and practically broken netcode. It’s nice to see that legacy support, though.
