While most of one’s time spent being a video game fanatic, addict, or enthusiast is awesome, tearing through war zones, playing elite level sports with relative ease, and getting lost in other-worldly fantasy, there is an agonizing element to being a gamer. That agony usually stems from a favorite character meeting their grisly, untimely end, and sometimes the uneasiness can result from uncertainty about the future of one’s favorite series. Half-Life fans, for instance, are still praying for that surprise announcement of a third game that will likely never come.

But in the cases of some franchises, we know there will be a “next game,” barring some unforeseeable development catastrophe. Elder Scrolls fans are being treated to new releases of Skyrim every so often, and TES Online is still doing well, so the sixth installment of that series, which is spoken of openly, may not be for some time, because the developers are still working on these other games. In contrast, Fallout 4 was released back in late 2015, and there is a phenomenal amount of speculation about the future of the series. Nothing is set in stone, and there is no exact information about whether the game is even on the radar screen yet, but here are fifteen of the most awesome rumors. As with any rumors regarding a game that may or may not be in production, these range from plausible to ludicrous with a few hoaxes in between.

15 2020 Release Date?

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

There was some speculation that either a new Elder Scrolls title or Fallout game (TES was considered more likely) would be announced at 2017’s E3. Too bad, so sad, in case you missed it, it didn’t happen. At this rate, it seems that there is a lot going on at Bethesda and while Fallout 5 is almost a sure thing, there is a line in which to wait, and there are a few projects in front of this one. At this point, it looks an awful lot like the next game may not be until 2020. This is a long time to wait, but we’d rather something like this not be rushed. Anyone who has had their heart broken by a game released too soon and without sufficient polish knows that additional waiting time is a small price to pay. A release date of 2020 would make sense, given that it was five years between New Vegas and 4.

14 As Of November 2016: Obsidian Is “Not” Involved

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

Eight months ago, there was an AMA with Obsidian, and —obviously— a fan asked whether or not they were developing an upcoming Fallout game. Their answer was a definitive “no,” but they did admit they would love to work on another game for the series. Many people took this at face value, but other skeptical fans read this as a bold-faced lie because obviously if the game is being developed it is up to Bethesda to announce their work to the world.

On the topic of Obsidian and their non-involvement with this possible product, many fans (including this one) credit Chris Avellone, who wrote and worked as a designer on New Vegas for a great deal of what made that game great. Sadly, he left the company back in 2015 — would it be a legitimate addition to the Fallout universe without him?

13 Creation Club And VR

These two elements of gameplay are very likely, especially given the fact that both were confirmed for other games at E3 back in June. Bethesda announced “Creation Club,” which will now have all mods regulated by the company and all will have a price tag. There are a wealth of arguments both for and against this development, but it does sound better than 2015’s “Paid Mods,” the botched try to monetize mod content creation back in 2015.

VR capability pretty much goes without saying for a future Fallout game, given that virtual reality will soon (scheduled for October) be available for Fallout 4. Given the graphical quality of games like Skyrim and Fallout 4, VR is an intriguing idea.

12 Could Battlecry Studios Be Involved?

If we take that Reddit AMA above and believe that Obsidian has nothing to do with any upcoming Fallout title, the question becomes “well, who else is going to do it?” Some intelligent people online have suggested that BattleCry Studios may just be the group to do it, and there is some (read: a very tiny, minuscule amount of) evidence to suggest that they’re already underway.

In short, BattleCry Studios has been working on the game Battlecry, that has either been canceled altogether or delayed indefinitely. In the mean time, there has been a rumor that ZeniMax has been hiring peopleon toBattleCrywho have experience on AAA games for an undisclosed project. It’s a huge stretch to think that this stands as any sort of proof, but for those looking closely, the necessary pieces might be falling into place.

11 A Voice Actor’s Instagram Post

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

Last year, Ryan Alosio, a voice actor who played Deacon in Fallout 4 implied in an Instagram post that production of Fallout 5 was already underway. After some uproar and initial excitement at his post “Internally there is movement gearing up for the pre-production of Fallout 5 ….(shhh), obviously I can’t get into any details at all right now but it will be a very interesting journey moving forward.” he removed this and claimed he was in the role of his character when he made the joke.

While plenty of people argued that Alosio’s retraction means the game is not underway, others think that the leak was “intentional” to stir up publicity and we are all being played. This has happened before, and there was a similar leak from Erik Todd Dellums (Three Dog in Fallout 3) who “accidentally leaked Fallout 4 info early on Twitter.

10 Fallout 5 Or A Spin-off?

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

Based on precedent, there is some potential for there to be another full-length spin off the game before Fallout 5 actually shows up. Obviously, the first two games came out one after the other, but since then, there has been at least one spin off between numbered “main series” games. Between the second and third were Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel. Between three and four, there was New Vegas, and there is some disagreement among the dedicated fans of this series over whether or not it is technically a main series game or a spin-off. Granted, Fallout: Shelter came out on PC and for the Xbox One, which let us build and maintain a Vault as overseers, but plenty of people think there will be either a sequel or spin-off from Fallout 4 before we see a fifth game.

9 Which Consoles Will Run This Game?

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

There are a couple of reasons for which the future of Fallout will likely have nothing to do with the current consoles. Chances are, the next installment of the series will be an upgrade from number four. Graphics, gameplay, the length of the story and the sheer size of the map are all things that will likely improve.

This all requires a great deal of performance from the machine running the game and as we have all found out, both consoles were barely up to the task of operating Fallout 4. Obviously, concerns like these lie as much with developers as they do with the console, but we all know (hope) that Bethesda isn’t just going to phone this one in, and will offer a game that will be improved in every way. This will require new tech, and chances are the Xbox One and PS4 won’t have anything to do with the next title.

8 In Game Time Period?

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

Earlier on, when discussing the potential return to New California for a potential site for the new game, we mentioned that time period. As we said the first two games take place about 90 and 170 years after the Great War that destroyed the United States and world. The more recent titles are all set in the 2270s and 2280s. There is massive potential to explore other time periods. One of the most intriguing ideas with regard to the time period is to have something closer to the date of the bombs dropping. Ideas for a plot include rebuilding a city for a population of vault dwellers, or just another Fallout style “save the wasteland and its hapless inhabitants from scumbags.” Seeing the Fallout world closer to the Great War would be an interesting experience.

7 Leaving The United States

This rumor should not be taken too seriously, because it has no connection to a developer, but it is something often discussed on forums. At this point in development, which the game may or may not be, there is very little to go on, but according to lore, most of the world was at least seriously affected by the Great War. There is technically potential for a Fallout game to take place in another country, particularly those that experienced the most devastation (China, the Soviet Union, in particular), but we don’t expect it to happen. There has been some talk of whether London would work for a future site for a game. Europe was in a state of war before the bombs dropped, according to the official story of the Fallout games we know, so while there is potential, don’t start placing bets just yet.

6 New Vegas 2 And New Orleans

We’ll file this carefully in our rumor pile that has been labeled “Probably Not.” A couple of months ago, details were leaked about a new Fallout game with the above title. New Vegas, the wildly successful spin-off game that was produced by Obsidian between Fallout 3 and 4 was an incredible adventure and one that many fans consider their favorite in the series. We imagine that most fans of the series would be on this like flies to excrement, but very shortly after these rumors showed up, they were quickly proven false. While it would most definitely sell, and we imagine another decent story could be told once again in the Mojave Desert, this rumor will likely never come true even if it is a solid idea.

5 Setting In The American South

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

Looking at the series so far from a geographical perspective, most of the regions in the United States have been covered. The first two games took care of the West Coast. The third and fourth games, Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel, took place in the Midwest (Illinois to Colorado), and northern Texas respectively. Fallout 3 was in D.C. and the surrounding area, while New Vegas took us to the Southwest, and 4 was back to the East Coast, treating us to a journey through Boston and the surrounding area. Enough of the history lesson, there are a couple of areas not yet explored. The entire southern part of the Eastern seaboard of the United States remains completely untouched by this series.

If the goal is an all-new game, it makes some sense to go to a region in which players have yet to explore. Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Mississippi, and Alabama all sound like they could be parts of the setting for the next game.

4 We Might Not Know Anything Official Until It Is Close

Fallout 3 was revealed an absurd amount of time before the actual game was released. It was July, 2004 when Bethesda announced that they would be developing a third installment of the series. It took over four more years for their game to make it into stores, but once it got there, it was a timeless classic. With the more recent major titles from the series, the reveals have been much closer to the actual release dates. In the case of Fallout: New Vegas, the game was announced about sixteen months before it was released. With the fourth game, however, the announcement came after a great deal of speculation, just ahead of E3 back in June 2015. In the case of the next game, they may opt for a short wait between official announcement and release.

3 A Return To The West Coast

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

One of the biggest issues and most pressing questions for a game like a future Fallout title is where it will take place, hence us dedicating multiple entries to the setting. As we said earlier, the first two games took place in New California, and in terms of the timeline of events, the stories of the first two games were set in 2161 and 2241 respectively. We have yet to see the NCR in the glory that only modern gaming systems can provide. The first two games, impressive, immersive, and incredible as they were, an upcoming Fallout title could very well take us back there for a new experience on the West Coast.

2 New York City

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

This isn’t so much a rumor as a highly popular fan choice for a future game. In fact, it has been for some time. We gave you a run down of the settings of the earlier games in a previous entry. The West Coast, Texas, DC, the Southwest and, of course, Boston have been covered. New York is noticeably absent from the list of iconic American cities — it could be a gold mine for a Fallout game.

There isn’t much in the games and surrounding lore about New York, but we know it was decimated (listed as “gone” along with D.C. and Boston in Fallout 4) during the war in 2077. Because we’re talking about it and because so many fans want it, that makes it highly unlikely, but the rumors and chatter about a New York Fallout game will likely not go away.

1 Is There Any Possibility Of An MMO?

Get Hyped 15 Fallout 5 Rumors That Will Blow You Away

Most fans will remember that a few years ago, an MMO by the name of Fallout Online was in development by Masthead Studios (published by Interplay). It was canceled and ultimately, after some time in court with Interplay and Masthead, Bethesda ended up with the rights to the cancelled game. It was a mess and discussing it is peripheral to the fact that iDigitalTimes published an article before E3 this year, claiming that ZeniMax and Bethesda were looking to hire a senior core tech engineer with “experience developing for online multiplayer environment.”

This is not enough information to confirm that the next Fallout game is an MMO and given what ZeniMax has going on, there are plenty of other areas for someone with that experience to be working on. The idea of a Fallout MMO is one of those polarizing ideas that almost split the population of fans in half. At this point, it seems highly unlikely.
