After being teased during Sony’s “State of Play” the other day, Sucker Punch gave up the ghost at The Game Awards tonight. In a trailer that showed a decent amount of gameplay, we finally got an extended look at Ghost of Tsushima and it still looks fantastic. Channeling more Samurai film vibes, we saw some bloody combat, intense drama, and a lot of intrigue.

It turns out, the main character is a man that was presumed dead after a battle (MediEvil, anyone?). Because of his status as a ghost, he’s unexpected across Japan. Using the assumption of his death, players will control the unnamed man as he journies throughout the land to try and stop the invading Mongols.

While it’s a little disappointing that we didn’t get an even deeper look at the game, everything appears to be shaping up well. The setting is absolutely mystifying and the emphasis on stealth looks different from the recent crop of action-heavy open-world games. Anyone hoping for an early 2020 release, though, will be sad to learn that Ghost of Tsushima is slated for a Summer 2020 release window. It looks like that rumor of The Last Of Us: Part II’s delay was true, after all.

Combining all of the trailers together, we’ve seen maybe 20 minutes from Ghost of Tsushima in total. Sucker Punch has been very tight-lipped about the game, which only adds to the mystery surrounding it. Normally, it’d be unwise to get excited about something we’ve seen so little of, but Sucker Punch’s track record is pretty stellar.

The company got in with Sony by creating the Sly Cooper franchise on PS2. When the PS3 released, the company shifted gears to tackling superheroes by creating inFamous. As should be evident from all of these titles, open-world sandboxes are Sucker Punch’s forte.

The real defining feature of Ghost of Tsushima, thus far, is so accurately it captures the look and feel of Akira Kurosawa’s work. I’d believe this was a missing film from his storied career if it wasn’t revealed to be a PS4 game. It’s like a dream come true for fans of Samurai films from the 70s.
