The Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is now here, and players have discovered that the game’s new Iki Island expansion contains references to other Sony hits, including God of War and Bloodborne. Ghost of Tsushima’s new DLC adds another 10 – 15 hours to the core game experience, introducing new quests, stories, and enemy types.

Ghost of Tsushima was one of the most impressive PlayStation 4 exclusives of 2020, and is now available on PS5 thanks to the Director’s Cut. The new-gen version of the game includes a host of improvements, including Japanese lip sync, which is now available thanks to the new console’s ability to render cinematics in real time. Ghost of Tsushima fans on PS5 will also benefit from the DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, as well as improved loading times, 4K resolution options, and framerates targeting 60fps. Players who already own the game can upgrade their copy of Ghost of Tsushima to the new expanded version.

The game’s new Iki Island DLC pays homage to other Sony classics with three Wind Shrines, Shrine of Ash, The Blood-Stained Shrine, and Shrine of Shadow, referencing previous PlayStation hits God of War, Bloodborne, and Shadow of the Colossus (via GamesRadar). The shrines come with riddles that require solving, each packed with nods to the PS4 games. The full riddles found at the shrines are as follows:

“Shrine of Ash: In fall, a tree fruitswhich grows from seed to sapling,A stranger and son.Boy, honour your father’s fightShow him the strength of your blade.”

“The Blood-Stained Shrine: The first green of springsickens to black, decaying,plagued by blood and beast.Hunter, reject death’s allure.Prepare to duel man’s frailty.”

“Shrine of Shadow: Stone knows no season,nor the colossus that wasfelled to save one soul.Wanderer, come like through mist,a ghost casting no shadow.”

Completing the shrine’s puzzles will unlock a unique armor skin based on each of the games, and have already been discovered by players. On Twitter, Andy_theTurtle is one of many Ghost of Tsushima fans enjoying the armor set. As expected, the skins are created with the games in mind, and feature staples of their characters’ designs, such as Kratos’ red tattoo.

As well as the shrine riddles referencing the PS4 classics, the shrine designs also call back to the games. The Shrine of Ash, a nod to God of War, is surrounded by white trees similar to those seen in the game’s opening scenes. A glowing handprint and an axe serve as further references to Kratos’ PS4 adventure, while the shrine’s riddle speaks of a father and son. The Blood-Stained Shrine, complete with raven feathers, is a nod to Bloodborne, with its riddle speaking of a hunter, blood, and beasts. Finally, Shrine of Shadow references Shadow of the Colossus with the game emblem and a riddle using the words “stone” and “colossus.”

The armor sets aren’t the first time Sucker Punch Productions has referenced games like Shadow of Colossus and Bloodborne within its Japanese world. Ghost of Tsushima Legends, the free co-op PvE experience, previously added outfits inspired by iconic PlayStation characters from the three games referenced in the Iki Island shrines, as well as Horizon Zero Dawn. The PS4 skins returned to Ghost of Tsushima Legends in July. If Ghost of Tsushima plans to expand in the future, it’s likely fans can expect to uncover even more PS4 character references.
