Before Jason Reitman became the director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, he made a hilarious cameo in his dad Ivan’s film Ghostbusters 2. A director, writer, and producer, Jason Reitman is a four-time Oscar nominee, one for producing, one for writing, and two for directing Up in the Air and Juno. While he’s yet to win, at only 43-years-old, he may yet get another shot at the gold statue before his career is over. Jason is a known commodity at this point, and possibly even more famous than his father Ivan, who directed the first two Ghostbusters movies and other comedy hits like Stripes and Twins.
As director and producer of both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2, there are few people as responsible for the legacy of the franchise as Ivan Reitman. While he seems to have quietly retired from directing, having not helmed a film since 2014, Ivan remains active as a producer, and it’s in that capacity that he’ll return for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. If any other filmmaker is to direct a sequel to the first two movies though, it’s absolutely fitting that Ivan would hand the reigns over to his son.
While it remains to be seen if Jason Reitman will do his father and franchise devotees proud in directing Ghostbusters: Afterlife, he does already have direct experience with the franchise, in a way. Jason made a cameo early on in Ghostbusters 2, and here’s where it can be found.
Jason Reitman Cameoed in Ghostbusters 2
Despite them saving the world from Gozer and the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man at the end of Ghostbusters, by the time Ghostbusters 2 rolled around in 1989, the titular team was disbanded. Ray owns an occult bookstore, but to make ends meet, he works with Winston as an entertainer at children’s birthday parties, complete with their classic uniforms, proton packs, and a decidedly meta moment in which they sing along to the Ghostbusters movie theme song. As fans will no doubt recall, the party shown in the first act of Ghostbusters 2 sees Ray and Winston receive no respect for their efforts from the kids in attendance, with one making it known he wanted He-Man to attend instead.
Another boy at the party snidely tells the two Ghostbusters that his dad says they’re full of crap, and that’s why they went out of business. That little jerk is none other than Jason Reitman, and while the line he says and the reaction it gets from Ray and Winston are already amusing on a surface level, knowing that his real-life dad actually directed the Ghostbusters movies makes the joke an act of self-deprecation, increasing its humor value even more. Ivan’s daughter Catherine also cameoed in Ghostbusters 2, as the little girl that Egon suggests taking the puppy away from. Jason Reitman now has a daughter of his own, so one wonders if he’ll have her appear in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
