New Ghostbusters: Afterlife poster teases an inter-dimensional apocalypse. The past meets the future in the Ghostbusters legacy sequel from director Jason Reitman.

For Ghostbusters the past is of course embodied by the original movie’s cast members including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts, all of whom are returning for Reitman’s film. But if the franchise has any future it will be carried on by Afterlife’s young actors Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace, who play the grandchildren of original Ghostbuster Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), along with newly-arrived adult stars Carrie Coon (as Egon’s daughter) and Paul Rudd. In Afterlife, the new generations of Spenglers re-discover the original Ghostbusters’ legacy as well as their tech, including the iconic Ecto-1.

Of course with ghostbusting comes great responsibility. And that fact is driven home powerfully in a new Ghostbusters: Afterlife poster teasing that the stakes this time around are very high indeed. Nothing less than the future is at risk as the new Ghostbusters pick up their proton packs and face down the paranormal. The poster also reminds fans that Afterlife is a theater-only release. The original Ghostbusters of course also included an inter-dimensional threat in the form of Gozer, the Sumerian shape-shifting god of destruction the ghostbusting crew faced off with in the movie’s effects-heavy finale. Ghostbusters: Afterlife has already shown that it will happily bring back antagonists from the original movie in revealing the miniature Stay Puft marshmallow men who show up so it wouldn’t be a shock to see Gozer return for a rematch. Indeed it’s already been teased that Gozer is the big bad of the new movie, but of course the film could always pull a switch and introduce a new prime antagonist after baiting fans with a Gozer return.

The new poster doesn’t confirm Gozer at all but does indicate that the movie features a Gozer-sized threat that will have to be reckoned with. But much more than Ghostbusters, the new art conjures Stranger Things, the other nostalgic sci-fi property starring Wolfhard. Indeed, Ghostbusters: Afterlife marketing thus far has leaned much more toward the nostalgic than the humorous, creating the impression that Afterlife is closer to a Spielbergian adventure movie than a snarky comedy about a crew of wise-cracking Ghostbusters getting up to antics. It remains to be seen how Reitman juggles tones in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but all indications are that things will be more serious than funny, an impression that is only reinforced by this new poster with its sense of an ominous threat from some other realm. Of course one complaint about Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot was that it went way too far into the ridiculous, so it’s possible Sony is simply playing up Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s more serious elements in advertising as a way of reassuring fans that this time their childhoods won’t be ruined.
