Though director Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot still has to win over a vocal majority of fans, it seems to have the support of the previous generation of paranormal hunters. Just about every one of the living main cast member of the previous two films – Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver – have agreed to a cameo role in the new film, lending the project some form of credibility as it looks to overcome the controversy.
As great as it will be to see the veterans returning (though, as new characters since this is a hard reboot) to the Ghostbusters franchise, there’s one name on the above list that’s noticeably absent. We speak of comedy icon Rick Moranis, who played accountant Louis Tully in the first two movies. The actor has not appeared in a live action film in almost two decades, but many had hoped the return of Ghostbusters would be enough to bring him back to the big screen. However, Moranis isn’t interested, and now he’s revealed why.
In an interview with THR, Moranis stated that coming back to the series after all this time didn’t make sense, even though he hopes the new movie is successful:
“I wish them well. I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?”
This will no doubt be disappointing for longtime Ghostbusters fans to hear, but one can understand where Moranis is coming from. Sometimes, actors just decide it’s time to move on and leave a major franchise behind. Especially if it was just going to be a single scene that most likely serves as a fun nod to the original films (and not something more substantial), Moranis is justified in passing up the opportunity. If he is to ever make his anticipated return to acting, he has every right to choose the role he feels is the right fit at any given moment.
Contrary to popular belief, Moranis does not consider himself retired. He took an 18-year hiatus after his wife passed away so he could look after their children, but now that the kids are grown up, Moranis would be interested in taking on another role. However, he’s not going to come back just for the sake of it. He wants whatever project he signs on for to be a worthwhile endeavor so it really means something:
“I took a break, which turned into a longer break. But I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role. And as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it. [But Ghostbusters] didn’t appeal to me.”
Viewers should not skew this quote as an indictment on the potential quality of the Ghostbusters reboot (after all, even Murray’s finally onboard); it’s merely a statement detailing Moranis’ attitude when it comes to returning to acting. Arguably, it’s a positive sign that he feels this way, since it means his hypothetical comeback will have some weight to it and won’t just be a gimmick.
Moranis has left behind an enduring legacy that includes beloved works such as Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, so we’d all be better off if he signed on for something that had his full attention. It could just add to his impressive résumé.
