On Gilmore Girls, Lorelai Gilmore is the fast-talking, coffee swilling, junk-food-loving half of the beloved duo. Residing in the quirky hamlet of Stars Hollow, Lorelai and her daughter Rory live an almost picture-perfect life. They eat as much as they want and never gain a pound, they’re best friends and any disagreements are squashed by the end of an episode.

But even super cool, super mom Lorelai suffers some missteps on her journey from becoming a teen mom to a successful entrepreneur. Whether it’s her tumultuous relationship with her parents, her mothering skills or her love life, Lorelai can be as screwed up as the rest of us. Here are the 10 biggest mistakes Lorelai made that we can learn from.

10 She Feels Threatened By Rory’s Relationship With Her Grandparents

Free from her smothering, upper-class upbringing, Lorelai builds a wonderful life for herself and Rory. When Friday night dinners become the norm, Rory’s gets the warm and fuzzies not just for her grandparents, but the perks of their lifestyle as well. Lorelai grows insecure, frustrated and jealous. Rory can have the best of both worlds: a balance Lorelai could never strike.

As Rory follows the path originally paved for her mother, Lorelai becomes combative, picking fights with Rory, Richard and Emily. She even costs Rory access to a huge trust fund worried the money will render her obsolete. Lorelai continues to question her parents’ motives, waiting for them to show their true colors so she can expose them to Rory.

9 She Lets Rory Off The Hook For Getting Arrested

After Mitchum Huntzberger tells Rory she doesn’t have what it takes to make it as a journalist during season 5, Rory goes off the rails. Thanks to the influence of the Life and Death Brigade and boyfriend Logan, Rory does so spectacularly by stealing a yacht.

If there is ever a time Lorelai should act like a normal mom, it would be after picking up her daughter from the police station. But Lorelai turns it into a comic bit and shifts the blames to the Huntzbergers. Lorelai has a habit of letting Rory off the hook too easily, and she should have laid out the repercussions instead of giving Emily and Richard time to intervene.

8 She Delivers Rory’s Letter To Dean

Rory rekindles her romance with her married ex-boyfriend, Dean during the season 4 finale. This is low down and dirty, especially for a Gilmore girl. But Rory is unapologetic and is rewarded with an all-expenses-paid trip to Europe (it’s doubtful Emily would have extended the invite if she knew how badly her precious granddaughter screwed the pooch.)

Because Rory is, well, Rory, she eventually regrets not only sleeping with Dean but bailing on him with no explanation immediately afterward. She stops acting like a brat long enough to task Lorelai with delivering a letter to Dean recounting their night together — written proof that Dean’s a cheater. Rory should clean up her messes, and she should learn to never put anything incriminating in writing.

7 She Asks Luke To Marry Her

Feeling betrayed by her parents and Rory, Lorelai clings to the one constant in her life, Luke. His steadfast loyalty mixed with her vulnerability leads her to spontaneously pops the question on the season 5 finale. Lorelai’s commitment issues are front and center for the first four seasons, but with Luke, she’s all in. Although Luke initially feels the same way, obstacles pop up that reveal he’s just not ready. The more Lorelai pushes, the more Luke resists. This romance isn’t ready to go to the next level, especially in the midst of so much family drama.

6 She Says Yes To Max

Lorelai’s on-again-off-again relationship with Max during season 1 ends with a proposal. Their affection for one another is undeniable, but they don’t know each other very well, spending more time apart than together. Lorelai gets caught up in all those yellow daisies, but the fact that she is so hesitant to commit is a huge red flag.

A woman who wants to get married doesn’t need days to weigh the pros and cons. All signs point to a runaway bride, especially as Max becomes more insistent about Lorelai making compromises. Her acceptance only serves to stave off the inevitable breakup for a few months longer.

5 She Sleeps With Christopher After Breaking Up With Luke

When Lorelai breaks off her engagement with Luke, she goes running to Christopher on the season 6 finale. The first time she and Luke break up, Lorelai lays in bed, mopes and lets her daughter hunt and gather every conceivable kind of comfort food available. That’s how to deal with heartbreak. Sleeping with your baby daddy who has been carrying a torch for decades is — to be clear — not the best way to go.

There’s no turning back which is why Lorelai does it. She can’t get sucked back into a bad relationship if she breaks it beyond repair. It’s not completely out of character: Lorelai has turned to Christopher for comfort when she’s been upset, but this is one time she should have taken a breath, climbed into her bed and pulled the covers over her head.

4 She Rushes Into Marriage

Lorelai’s life choices take a nosedive during the show’s final season. After ending her relationship with Luke, she rebounds with Christopher. Technically, they don’t have a whirlwind romance since they’ve known each other their whole lives. But things go quickly, possibly because the only way Lorelai knows to move on is to go full force. It’s not a good plan, and it fails miserably. Any fans rooting for this ship saw it quickly sink. The usually strong-minded, strong-willed Lorelai lets Christopher navigate the course of their romance, including an ill-conceived quick marriage.

3 She Inserts Herself Into Rory’s Love Life Too Much

Mothers and daughters aren’t meant to share everything, but try telling that to Lorelai. Rory doesn’t get much privacy as she navigates the rough waters of young love. Lorelai has to know everything before Rory’s ready to reveal the details. When Jess comes to town, Lorelai does her best to keep him and Rory apart which backfires. Rory has to learn on her own that Jess is a jerk.

It’s not as if Lorelai has the whole love and dating thing figured out herself, so she shouldn’t be so eager to assume mother knows best. By the end of the series, she finally trusts her grown daughter to make her own decision on whether or not to tie the knot.

2 She’s Stubborn About Asking For Help

It’s understandable why Lorelai is reluctant to ask her parents for anything since there are often strings attached, but those Friday dinners worked out well for everyone in the end. Lorelai doesn’t want her mother to care for her when she’s sick, she doesn’t want to ask for a loan to save her house, she only turns to Luke when a shortage of cash means no more Dragonfly Inn. Sookie offers love advice and Lorelai scoffs. She’s often unyielding on any number of subjects or decisions. It’s frustrating to see needing support equated with weakness.

1 She Doesn’t Prepare Rory For Rejection

Let’s face it, Rory Gilmore is gratingly perfect during those early seasons. She excels in school, she doesn’t have hormonal mood swings, she’s sweet, lovely and smart, and everybody tells her so all the time. Her biggest fan is Lorelai who is convinced her daughter can do no wrong. So as Rory moves away and starts dealing with something slightly resembling reality, she’s totally unprepared. She gets a D on a paper, and she falls apart. A publishing magnate tells her she won’t make a good journalist, and she drops out of college.

Things go from bad to worse for Rory during the show’s revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, when Rory is aimless. She flies overseas for booty calls with Logan (who has a girlfriend) and spends a lot of time whining about how she can’t find a job. Lorelai sets the bar so high, Rory doesn’t know how to cope when she can’t meet her mother’s expectations or her own.
