Beloved despite being cynical and bitter as a teenager, Jess Mariano has always been a staple of Gilmore Girls, and fans appreciate his growth over the seasons. It’s interesting to compare the Jess in the Netflix revival A Year In The Life to his younger self, because he learns to be more caring and less pessimistic as he gets older.

Out of Rory’s three love interests, fans would likely consider Dean Forester the most mature, while Jess has to get his act together in many ways. But Jess does have moments when he’s smart, practical, and totally understands the situation. It’s interesting to think back on Jess’ behavior on Gilmore Girls and see when he seems wise and when he needs to grow up more.

10 Mature: He Realizes His Dad Can’t Take Care Of Him

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Jess Was Mature (And 5 He Was Immature)

Jess’ past is really sad, and by the time that he’s in high school, he knows that his parents don’t seem able to look after him properly. In the season 3 episode “Here Comes The Son,” which was a backdoor pilot for a spin-off starring Jess that didn’t happen, Jess goes to Venice, California to see if his dad has stepped up his parenting game. Unfortunately for Jess, his dad doesn’t have a clue how to talk to him, and he hadn’t even told his girlfriend that he had a child.

Jess behaves in a mature way in this episode, as he understands that his dad has faults and flaws, and he knows that he should go back to Stars Hollow. The fact that Jess can see the truth about his dad is painful but very grown up.

9 Immature: He Hates Stars Hollow Immediately

Jess’ move to Stars Hollow goes about as well as one would expect for a cynical teenager. He doesn’t want his mom deciding where he should live, and he’s not certain that this quirky and cheesy town is where he wants to be.

While fans can understand that Jess feels neglected by his mom and dad, so he’s not going to jump for joy at living in Stars Hollow at first, it’s immature that he doesn’t even try to like it. He’s a bit too judgmental and he doesn’t even wait to get to know anyone living there. If he was a bit more open-minded, it’s possible he would find it as charming as Rory and Lorelai do.

8 Mature: He Writes A Book And Starts A Literary Career

Season 6 Jess is much more mature than he was in previous seasons. In the season 6 episode “The Real Paul Anka,” Jess is living in Philadelphia and working at a hybrid publisher, art gallery, and bookstore. He wants to share the good news, and he asks Rory and Luke to go to his open house.

If Jess had never become more mature, he would never be able to work in book publishing, as it’s a creative and collaborative industry that involves lots of passionate, dedicated hard work. Gilmore Girls fans enjoyed seeing how far Jess has come.

7 Immature: He Sets Up A Fake Scene Pretending Someone Got Murdered

One of the most immature things that someone can do is play a prank, and so it makes sense that when Taylor sees a fake scene of a murder outside of Doose’s Market, it was Jess who did it.

Jess is bored and looking for something to do, but this is the wrong thing to spend his energy on, and he should definitely find another activity to pass the time. Rory figures out that it was Jess and she’s not pleased or impressed. Jess doesn’t seem to feel bad about what he did, but he should be more remorseful, as Luke has to deal with everyone’s opinions of Jess. While Stars Hollow residents can be frustrating, they do love their town and they take lots of pride in it.

6 Mature: He Doesn’t Like Bad Attitudes Or Conceited People

In season 6, Jess meets Logan, and he couldn’t possibly be less impressed. He not only lets Rory know that he didn’t picture her with someone like Logan, but he makes it clear that Logan has a cynical attitude and is acting too conceited.

While Jess is definitely negative and a bit snarky when he’s a teenager, he does mature as he gets older, and this storyline is proof. He knows that people shouldn’t look down on others and he can see something problematic in Logan that Rory can’t.

5 Immature: He Insults Dean’s Intelligence

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Jess Was Mature (And 5 He Was Immature)

Jess and Rory’s relationship plays out each season, and a lot of his immature moments happen because of his feelings for her. In the season 2 episode “The Bracebridge Dinner,” Jess asks Rory if she and Dean have any interesting conversations. When he asks, “So you got a teacher-student thing going?” she tells him to stop and he says, “No, really, I’m curious. What do you guys talk about?”

Jess doesn’t have to like Dean, and fans know that he’s jealous because he loves Rory, but there’s no excuse to ask Rory so many insulting questions. He should respect that Dean and Rory are a couple and back off until it’s clear that they have broken up. His comments just feel mean.

4 Mature: He Forms A Better Bond With His Mom

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Jess Was Mature (And 5 He Was Immature)

While it would make sense if Jess held a grudge over his mom not being able to take care of him, he walks her down the aisle when she marries T.J. in the season 4 episode “Last Week’s Fights, This Week Tights.”

If Jess was as immature as he used to be, he would tell his mom that he couldn’t do that, or maybe he wouldn’t even go to the wedding. Instead, he plays an important role in it and it means a lot to her. This is a sweet storyline that fans enjoy watching as it’s one of Jess’ more cheerful moments.

3 Immature: He Buys Rory’s Picnic Basket Knowing Dean Wants To

In the season 2 episode “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” Rory and Dean expect that he will bid on Rory’s picnic basket and they’ll enjoy a romantic date together. Instead, Jess buys it.

This isn’t a very mature move for Jess to make. He knows that he’s causing trouble in paradise and it seems like he does it on purpose, as he loves Rory and is constantly waiting for her to realize that she belongs with him, not Dean. There are smarter ways for Jess to deal with his frustration, though.

2 Mature: He Tells Luke That He Made A Meaningful Impact On Him

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Jess Was Mature (And 5 He Was Immature)

At the end of the season 4 episode focusing on Liz and T.J.’s wedding, Jess lets Luke know that he understands the significance of what he did for him. Luke says he could tell how Jess felt and Jess says, “Yeah, but in a relationship, any relationship, it’s important to let the other person know you appreciate them so you don’t create barriers that delay any hope for reciprocation.”

There are so many moments when Jess is mean to Luke, so this is not only powerful but also proof of Jess’ maturity. He wants Luke to know that he cares about him and he realizes that sometimes, being vulnerable and talking about emotions is the best thing to do.

1 Immature: He Doesn’t Break Up With Rory And Just Leaves Town

One of the most immature, wrong things that Jess does is not breaking up with Rory and moving away from Stars Hollow. He phones Rory when she’s graduating from Chilton, and even though she says she can tell that he’s on the line, it’s too hard for him to say something.

While Jess might think it’s smarter to run and not talk about how he feels about Rory, or how he’s not sure that they can stay in a relationship, his actions are so much worse than any awkward, painful conversation.
