God of War introduced a lot of new aspects to the series which included a semi-open world to explore in some of the realms of Norse Mythology. Some realms have collectibles exclusive to them that will let you acquire and/or upgrade weapons or armor, such as smoldering ember in Muspelheim. Another item similar to that is the Chilling Mists of Niflheim.

The Chilling Mists of Niflheim is a legendary ranked item in God of War and is a crafting component needed for the Leviathan Axe in the game. Getting the Chilling Mists of Niflheim is a tough endeavor and requires you to do a bit of work in order to acquire the item.

What Are The Chilling Mists of Niflheim?

The Chilling Mists of Niflheim in God of War are, as previously stated, a crafting component that you can trade for Frozen Flame. This will allow you to upgrade the Leviathan Axe to its max level.

The item can only be found in one place in the entire game which is in Niflheim, the realm of fog in Norse mythology. In order to reach Niflheim, you need four Niflheim Language Ciphers.

How To Acquire The Four Niflheim Language Ciphers

Niflheim Language Ciphers can be found in certain chests scattered throughout God of War and some can be hard to reach as you have to progress through the main story to reach them. Here are four easy ways to acquire them.

• One cipher can be found in a chest outside a set of doors in front of Sindri’s shop on the Mountain Summit when you return there. On the other side of the door is a realm tear that needs to be dealt with. Once you’ve done this, the chest holding the cipher is on the other side.
• Another cipher can be found in a chest at the Ruins of The Ancients in the northern part of the Realm of Nine.
• Tyr’s hidden chamber contains two chests with a cipher in them. The first is in the room with runes in it just past the lift, while the other chest lies in a room just past the halls with the spinning blades.

Once you have obtained four ciphers, Niflheim can be accessed.

How To Obtain Chilling Mists In Niflheim

When you finally get to Niflheim, you’ll notice patches of fog that will kill you if you stay in them for too long. Stick to the nearby high ground and continue until you eventually get to Sindri at his shop. He’ll explain how past him is a maze that contains more of the lethal fog. In the maze is a central chamber that contains the Chilling Mists of Niflheim.

Sindri can craft a keystone that will grant you access to the central chamber, which is the workshop of dwarven craftsman Ivaldi, but he needs you to acquire 500 Mist Echoes for him to craft the keystone.

Acquiring The Mist Echoes

Mist Echoes can be found by opening chests and coffins scattered throughout the Niflheim maze but as you’ll be in the lethal mist, you won’t be able to survive long after the first area. Opening chests will give you more time to spend in the maze though.

When you first start off, stick to the first area, collect the mist echoes after dealing with the enemies and then hurry back to the entrance where it’s safe. The chests and coffins in the first area can be found at a pillar to the right of the entrance, two are near the end of the bridge and another set of twin chests are next to the lore marker.

Keep doing this until you get 500 mist echoes which is the amount needed to craft the talisman.

Entering The Central Chamber And Opening The Chest

Now head back to that first area again and take out the enemies there. Once defeated you will be able to open the way into the Central Chamber which also serves as a safe room inside of the maze.

The Chilling Mists of Niflheim in God of War can be acquired here but first, you have to obtain 5,000 mist echoes to open the chest holding it. To help you survive longer in the maze, acquiring Ivaldi’s armor set, one of the best armor sets in the game, will enable you to survive in the mist longer and make the grinding experience a bit quicker. The armor set can be acquired by obtaining Ivaldi’s rusty armor and Niflheim alloys, both of which spawn randomly in chests. A valkyrie boss can be found here which will also grant some mist echoes as well.

Once you get to 5,000 Mist Echoes needed to open the chest, return to the Central Chamber and open that chest to finally acquire The Chilling Mists of Niflheim to fully upgrade your leviathan axe.
