Godzilla: King of the Monsters viral website, Monarch Sciences, is possibly teasing King Ghidorah’s original defeat. It’s been speculated that Godzilla and King Ghidorah are ancient rivals who have clashed more than once in the history of Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse. After all, King Ghidorah has always been known as one of Godzilla’s arch-villains.

Directed by Michael Dougherty, the sequel to 2014’s Godzilla will bring three classic Toho monsters into Warner Bros. and Legendary’s shared cinematic universe. The upcoming Godzilla sequel will see the alpha predator in a battle with Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah as they all “vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence in the balance,” according to the official Godzilla: King of the Monsters synopsis. Godzilla 2 will also explore the efforts of the secret government agency Monarch as they try to prevent the monsters from causing irreparable damage.

The Monarch Sciences website, which is responsible for tracking Godzilla’s location and providing information on the MonsterVerse’s other monsters, releases irregular updates on the kaiju’s whereabouts as he travels across the Pacific Ocean. On Monday, Monarch Sciences revealed that Godzilla had disappeared, leading some to wonder if another trailer was coming soon. According to new information from Monarch Sciences, Godzilla is back on their radar and is currently in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Godzilla’s presence in the Sea of Okhotsk actually has meaning in Toho’s Godzilla universe. In the 1991 film, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, King Ghidorah’s body was found in the Sea of Okhotsk. Apparently, he was left for dead there by Godzilla several years before.

The reference to the Sea of Okhotsk is likely a way of teasing an earlier battle between the two monsters in which Godzilla possibly defeated Ghidorah. This isn’t the first time the Monarch Sciences website has hinted that the two have fought before. Monarch’s file on Ghidorah mentions that the three-headed monster has “claw and scorch marks” on his body, which are indicative of a previous encounter with Godzilla. All of this strengthens the theory that King of the Monsters is actually an apocalyptic rematch between Godzilla and Ghidorah.

Ghidorah, who may arguably be the true King of the Monsters in Godzilla 2, is believed to be Godzilla’s main opponent in the film, with Rodan and Mothra possibly serving as allies. King of the Monsters actor O’Shea Jackson has promised that Godzilla and Ghidorah will have an unforgettable showdown in the Godzilla sequel. It remains to be seen if history will repeat it itself with Godzilla emerging victorious once again in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
