The much-anticipated Godzilla vs. Kong trailer has finally arrived, and includes a tease of two new flying monsters – but just what are they? Directed by The Guest helmer/subversive genre movie legend Adam Wingard, the monster movie is one of 2021’s most anticipated blockbusters, and Godzilla vs. Kong’s first full-length trailer finally arrived online on January 24, prompting much excitement from fans.

The long-awaited face-off between two titans of creature feature cinema looks like it won’t disappoint fans of either franchise, with the action-heavy first glance finding a balance between Kong: Skull Island’s fast-paced thrills and Godzilla: King of The Monsters’ more realistic, contemporary setting. Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong will arrive in theatres and on HBO Max near the end of March 2020, and already the movie’s trailer has left prospective viewers with plenty of unanswered questions.

Chief among these inquiries is who (or what) those two flying monsters briefly seen in the trailer are. Near the close of Godzilla vs. Kong’s jam-packed trailer, viewers can see a glimpse of two strange new, slightly smaller monsters, who are unnamed. They’re Nozuki and Warbat, both of whose names were revealed when their designs were leaked last year. Although the two initially seem almost identical in appearance, these two serpentine monsters actually feature different colored wings, and both can be seen attacking Kong in (what looks like) different locations. MonsterVerse toys unveiled both Nozuki and Warbat’s designs last summer and, as a pair of sizeable winged serpents, it’s fair to guess that their reptilian nature may make the monstrous duo distant relatives of Kong’s titular enemy, Godzilla.

Only time will tell whether Kong’s face-off against Nozuki (which looks from the trailer like it takes place in the Hollow Earth) will occur during the movie’s action, or in a flashback to a far earlier era. The moment sees Kong slam Nozuki into another of its kind, possibly injuring or killing both monsters in the process. Meanwhile, the appearance of Warbat seems, from the trailer’s brief glimpse, to take place in the modern-day city setting of Godzilla vs. Kong but again, viewers won’t know for sure until more of the movie’s action is unveiled.

What can be said for certain is that Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong will be the feature film debut of these two beasts. While the toy designs of Nozuki and Warbat were debuted some time ago, neither monster has appeared in a Toho movie to date. While Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have brought classic kaiju such as Rodan and King Ghidorah to the screen, it’s clear from the presence of Nozuki and Warbat that Godzilla vs. Kong will be adding some new gnarled faces into the mix instead of relying solely on the established stable of movie monsters.
