Michael Sheen and David Tennant are back in the first official image from Good Omens season 2. Based on the 1990 novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Good Omens started out as a miniseries on Amazon Prime back in 2019. It follows the unlikely friendship between fussy, kindhearted angel Aziraphale (Sheen) and not-so-bad demon Crowley (Tennant) as the two work to prevent the rise of the Antichrist and the apocalypse. Good Omens was a huge success for Amazon, cultivating a dedicated fanbase online and much acclaim for the lead actors.

For two years, there was occasional talk of a follow-up, but nothing came to fruition until this past summer. Good Omens was granted a surprise season 2 renewal in late June, with Sheen, Tennant, and Gaiman (as producer and writer) back on board. This time around, Good Omens will find Aziraphale and Crowley settling back into life among humans when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery. Production has been underway since mid-October.

Now, fans have been granted an official peek at Sheen and Tennant’s returns as Aziraphale and Crowley. On Tuesday, Amazon unveiled the first look at Good Omens season 2, which finds the unlikely couple back together once again. Crowley is all smiles, while Arizaphale looks a tad more wary behind his teacup. Nevertheless, it’s fitting that the first official look at the season should be of the two of them together. Additionally, Amazon announced the returns of seven Good Omens cast members: Paul Adeyefa, Michael McKean, Gloria Obianyo, Miranda Richardson, Maggie Service, Reece Shearsmith, and Nina Sosanya. It’s said that some of these stars are reprising their season 1 roles, while others are playing new characters. They will be revealed at a later date. The same can be said for a premiere date, though one can speculate that if filming is already underway and will continue for several months, Good Omens season 2 won’t arrive until late 2022 at the earliest. 2023 might be a more likely date.

In between the Biblical humor and witty characters, Good Omens became so beloved because of the bond between Aziraphale and Crowley. Whether fans saw it in a romantic or platonic sense, the relationship between the two was the heart of the book and the first season, and hopefully the show will continue to keep that in mind. The announcement of Good Omens season 2 was met with some apprehension by fans, but Gaiman’s blessing has alleviated some of those concerns. This first look at Tennant and Sheen will likely further appease fans just by reminding them of what they love about the show. It’ll be even better once some kind of footage emerges, though that likely won’t be for a while. This will have to tide everyone over for now.
