Google Chat & Rooms Whats The Difference & How To Use Explained

Chat and Rooms are two ways for Google users to communicate quickly and conveniently with each other. Google Chat was originally part of Google Hangouts, which gave users the option to chat, email and video call all from one place. However, with Google Hangouts being phased out this year, Google is offering Google Chat as a replacement option.

Google users have multiple options to communicate, including the Messages app, which recently introduced new features such as end-to-end encryption and the ability to send texts over Wi-Fi. Alternatively, there’s Google Voice to call or text people across multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets and computers. Another option is Google Meet, a video chat service from Google that now allows users to customize backgrounds, in addition to features like Light Adjustment, which automatically brightens a user’s screen if necessary.

According to Google, Chat offers users the chance to hold a conversation in real-time, either one-on-one or by creating a group conversation. If multiple groups are involved, users can create a Room within Chat, allowing for more than one conversation at a time. For example, Chat is a great tool for a group of friends that are planning a night out, while Rooms is ideal for several different teams collaborating on a business project together. Both features are part of the iOS and Android versions of the Gmail app, and are also available in the web browser version. However, Chat also has its own app as well, available to download from the App Store and Google Play.

Getting Started With Google’s Chat & Rooms

To get started, the user will need to make sure Google Chat is enabled by logging into Gmail and heading to Settings. Then, clicking on View All Settings, followed by Chat and Meet, selecting the On option and clicking Save Changes. On an Android or iOS device, open up the Gmail app and tap Menu in the top left corner, and then head to the Settings. Next, users will need to choose the account they want to use for Google Chat, before checking the box for Select the chat and rooms tab.

To send a message in Google Chat, open up Gmail or the Chat app and select the recipient’s or group’s name under Chat, or click Start a Chat and type in the name/email address. After which, it is just a matter of entering the message and tapping Send. To create a Room in the web browser or on a smartphone, go to the Gmail app or open the Chat app and select Create a room. Enter the room name and then add the names or email addresses for the other participants. Using Chat and creating a Room is fast and easy, and provides Google users with yet another communication tool to enjoy.
