Not only has Google matched Apple Arcade’s monthly fee via Play Pass, but it’s also offering three times as many games.

In the world of mobile gaming, all of the hype has surrounded the launch of Apple Arcade this past week. It’s a subscription service that allows iOS owners access to 100 games upon launch for just $4.99 a month, so it’s a pretty good deal. Meanwhile, Google has quietly been going about its business, releasing its own rival subscription service on Android, Play Pass.

Google Play Pass is exactly the same as Apple Arcade. It’s a subscription service users pay for monthly that allows them access to a library filled with what looks like pretty entertaining games. It even costs the same price as Apple Arcade: $4.99 per month. However, rather than a free month to kick things off, Google is offering users who commit to the service for a year a $1.99 per month deal for those first 12 months.

That’s a pretty sweet deal. If you have the option of signing up to either Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass and you’re still on the fence, this final point might sway you. Play Pass boasts more than three times as many titles as its iOS rival on launch. It also has recognizable franchises on board such as Star Wars, Game Of Thrones, and Portal.

That being said, it’s not as if Apple Arcade doesn’t feature franchises players will recognize. Both Sonic and Rayman titles are among the service’s initial batch of games. We’d also like to point out at this juncture that quantity does not always equal quality. Just because Play Pass has more games than Apple Arcade doesn’t mean that it’s better. However, a large chunk of potential consumers will deem that the case when making their decision.

There are a lot of pros and cons when it comes to both services, and this is very much unchartered waters in the grand scheme of things. Mobile games purchased via app stores could well become a thing of the past if Play Pass and Apple Arcade are successful. It makes sense that people who play mobile games often would sign up for one of the services. However, with many reluctant to pay for their mobile games, the $4.99 price tag might be offputting, even if it is very reasonable.
