Google just launched the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro as its latest smartphones, but new evidence reveals the company is already working on a second Tensor chip for next year’s Pixel 7. More so than almost any other industry, smartphones move at an incredibly fast rate. Most companies release multiple models per year, annual successors for many of those devices, and it’s a pattern that keeps repeating itself over and over again.

Google is no exception to that rule. Just one year after releasing the Pixel 5 — a device that received a very lukewarm reception — the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are the new hotness in the Android scene. Google’s latest phones have eye-catching designs, brand new in-house processors, massively upgraded cameras, and plenty more. Whether someone’s looking to spend $599 or $899 on their next smartphone, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro stand out as two of the best options right now.

That’s what makes today’s news so exciting. Thanks to snooping from 9to5Google and former XDA Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman, there’s new evidence of Google already developing a second-gen version of Google Tensor. Tensor is Google’s first in-house silicon that powers the Pixel 6 handsets. Its performance is equivalent to that of a Snapdragon 888, but it also introduces many new AI and machine learning features that are not possible with Qualcomm’s chips. Assuming Tensor is the new go-to processor for Google smartphones, it’s safe to assume this second-gen Tensor chip will be the heart of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro in 2022.

What To Expect From Pixel 7 & Google Tensor 2

Rahman found mention of GS201 on an Android development page. 9to5Google discovered the ‘Cloudripper’ codename in multiple APK files for apps installed on the Pixel 6. GS101 is the codename for the Pixel 6’s Tensor chip, meaning GS201 is likely its successor. As for the Cloudripper codename, it’s also been associated with GS201 in other documents. There are hardly any other details about the upcoming Tensor chipset, but what’s certain is that it’s actively in the development stage at Google.

On the one hand, it’s not surprising Google’s doing any of this. The company clearly believes in-house silicon is the future for its smartphones — so of course it’s developing another version of it. However, now that we know the first-gen Tensor chip is outstanding, that makes the idea of an upgraded version all the more exciting. The same is true of the Pixel 7. These reports don’t shed any light on what the Pixel 7 will be capable of, but the prospect of an even better Pixel 6 is enough to catch our interest.

At the very least, this shows that Google is committed to its current vision for the Pixel. This is a company that’s tended to drastically change its smartphone strategy year after year. It’s created a lack of consistency and brand identity for the Pixel, and that clearly hasn’t helped Pixel’s lacking sales. With Google sticking to the Tensor formula and trying to make it better, that certainly puts next year’s handsets on the right track.
