The Pixel 6 is proving to be incredibly popular, but rumors of Google making a foldable Pixel continue to come through and the latest Pixel Fold leak reveals some details that are a little puzzling. Foldables did get off to a rocky start, but the early problems seem to have been resolved over time, clearing the way for more to arrive.
Google recently renewed cooperation with Samsung, combining Wear OS and Tizen. Google also chose Samsung to manufacture its advanced Tensor processor that powers the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, allowing on-device transaction and improved dictation, along with improved image processing and better video.
The latest news about Google’s rumored foldable Pixel comes from a scan of the Google Camera app, which is how some details of the Pixel 6 leaked early as well. The code review by 9to5 Google found references to a 2022 Pixel Fold. A label used in the code, ‘isPixel2022Foldable,’ seems to be a check for this unreleased model. A similar ‘isPixel2019’ label was used for the Pixel 4, so there is reason to believe that this adds credibility to the possibility of a Pixel Fold launching in 2022. An odd detail found refers to one of the cameras as ‘Folded,’ which 9to5 Google takes to mean that it might only be used when the phone is folded. Another possibility is a telephoto camera which might use a folded lens, similar to the Pixel 6.
Pixel Fold’s Puzzling Camera Details
While none of this information is confirmed, it is very suggestive. Additional details that were uncovered reveal Google’s supposed foldable Pixel might not use the same cameras as the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Instead the sensors mentioned in the Camera app code are identical to earlier models. A 12.2-megapixel IMX363 is the same main camera sensor used in the Pixel 5. This will be accompanied by a 12-megapixel IMX386 ultra-wide. There is also a mention of an 8-megapixel IMX355 for the selfie camera which matches the Pixel 5’s front-facing camera. Since foldable phones have an inside and an outside screen, there’s another selfie camera with the same IMX355 labeled ‘outer.’
While the camera specifications for the rumored Pixel Fold are not terribly exciting, the Pixel 5 still has a great camera system that users Google’s advanced computational photography expertise to work minor miracles with these older image sensors. That means Google’s foldable, if it really exists, will have strong cameras even if they aren’t the very best. A foldable Pixel from Google is exciting news and this new code dive adds further fuel to the rumors that Google might release a foldable phone soon.
