Google has released a free-to-play browser game to celebrate the Olympics and it happens to reference The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. The RPG, which takes the place of the search engine’s customary “Google Doodle,” was launched in honor of the Tokyo Olympics, which begin today, and it focuses on an anthropomorphic cat traveling to an island to take part in a series of sports-themed minigames. Considering Google’s usual fare, this Doodle is surprisingly in-depth, and offers a lot of content for players to explore.

Nintendo released a remake of Link’s Awakening in 2019, which received rave reviews. Although fans are still waiting for the next entry in the series, Nintendo has been keeping them busy with remakes of other Zelda games such as the recently released Skyward Sword HD. As of right now, Nintendo has stated that fans can expect Breath of the Wild 2 to release in 2022, though no concrete release date or even an official title has been given for the game.

In the meantime, those looking for an old-school RPG fix can try out Google’s Doodle Champion Island Games. Simply go to Google.com and click on the logo to play the game, which is filled with various mini-games, a loose story, and animated cutscenes. It’s an impressive game, and it even allows players to leave at any time and come back, taking advantage of the game’s autosave feature. Eagle-eyed fans have also observed a reference to Link’s Awakening in the opening cutscene, which sees the protagonist journeying by boat to an island with a striking mountain, just as Link did at the beginning of Link’s Awakening. Although the Google Doodle doesn’t seem to borrow much from Link’s Awakening aside from that nod to the game’s island landmark, it’s still an enjoyable old school title.

There’s no word on when Google plans to remove the game, but the Olympics are expected to end on August 8, 2021. Perhaps if the game is beloved enough, Google can release it in a more official capacity to keep it around forever rather than just have it be a limited time event. Either way, it’s an impressive amount of content for such a relatively small piece of software, especially considering how well animated the cutscenes look.

This isn’t the only gaming-related link to the Olympics either. Aside from the Google game and a subtle nod to Link’s Awakening, the opening ceremony at the Olympics used music from Sonic and Final Fantasy. This makes sense, as the likes of Sega and Square Enix are based out of Tokyo, Japan, where the event is being held. Using such iconic songs in the opening ceremony is a nice way of incorporating the culture and history of Tokyo.
