Demon slaying has never been so beautiful. Releasing on August 14th as a Steam Early Access title, Eastern Exorcist will have players taking on demonic monsters with sword-based combat in a hand-drawn style. A PS4 release is also planned to follow (no release date yet) and a demo is out now on Steam.

In this side-scrolling adventure, you play as an exorcist tasked with slaying monsters and demons in a brutal, yet beautiful, world. You’ll need to master the game combat system if you hope to overcome all the horrifying monsters and tough bosses.

The graphical style is inspired by Chinese ink paintings, and the backgrounds are incredibly detailed and give the world a unique atmosphere. For example, there is a moody lake, a misty winter forest, and an abandoned village. Its storytelling is told through the medium of Chinese opera and, according to the Steam page, has “a complicated journey with joy and sorrow.”

This will be the first release from the developer of Eastern Exorcist, Wildfire Game, but its founder Shaoyan Chen said that the team wants the side-scroller “to be as striking to watch as it is captivating to play.” He also mentioned how he wanted the combat to feel “as rich and real on screen as it feels in the hands of the person playing it.”

The game’s publisher bilibili has released the well-received Biped and Unrailed, so hopefully that streak continues with Eastern Exorcist. One of our writers even called Biped a great date night game. The Shanghai-based company also provides streaming video, live broadcasts, and mobile games to the Chinese public.

It’s great to get more games from developers around the world. PlayStation has an initiative called the China Hero project, which helps start-up indie developers in the country to make games that can reach a worldwide audience. Such games include the kinda repetitive but neat Monkey King: Hero is Back, and the promising Lost Soul: Aside.

Eastern Exorcist seems like another promising action title from the Middle Kingdom, and hopefully it’s promised complicated narrative with joy and sorrow will leave a mark. At least it will have a lovely art style and thrilling combat from the trailer we’ve seen so far!
