According to a recent interview, Gotham Knights will feature one cohesive open world right from the beginning of the game, and players will be able to traverse it in its entirety regardless of their current level.

The news comes from a recent report published by IGN, during which Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding spoke to the game’s setting and traversal methodology. Redding also discussed leveling systems, enemy encounters, and tactical equipment switching prior to particularly precarious tussles.

“It is one open world city, right from the start,” Redding told IGN. “And no, there’s no level gating whatsoever.”

According to Redding, progressing through the game naturally and leveling up as a gradual result of that will be directly correlative to a sort of sliding scale that determines enemy strength. Not only that, but as you make your way from the relatively easier early game to its more daunting later sections, you’ll begin to encounter an entirely different suite of enemies – who are, as you might expect, significantly stronger than their grunt-like predecessors.

“But it’s not a grind,” Redding added. “It’s not a situation where you’ll say, ‘Oh, God, I have to go grind this type of mission in order to level up to this, and then I can get this.'”

As a means of building on this, Redding qualified that as you begin to stumble across more and more crime activities sporadically dotted throughout the world of Gotham Knights, you’ll be met with a pretty wide range of enemy types and levels.

“You might see guys that are a little bit weaker than you, and guys that are a little bit stronger than you,” he added. “How you approach each of those situations, it presents you with some choices that you’re going to have to make. Like, ‘Is this a situation where I’m going to maybe swap out a piece of equipment, because I think I’m going to handle it better that way? Do I want to take a more stealthy approach?’ All of those are options that are available to the player, and the level of your enemy is just one factor in deciding that.”
