Rockstar Games has officially announced the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition remaster collection. This new bundle of remasters includes the core GTA games originally released for the PS2 and original Xbox: GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas.

The GTA trilogy remasters have been rumored for a while now. Rumors began swirling earlier this year, as 2021 is the 20th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto 3, which revolutionized the series with its 3D open-world sandbox. As time has gone on, the rumors have snowballed as leaks and listings added to their credibility. With the 20th anniversary of GTA 3 set for October 22, Rockstar has finally confirmed the remastered trilogy is real and that it’s releasing very soon.

In a Friday tweet, Rockstar Games confirmed Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is “coming soon.” It was previously rumored that the GTA Trilogy would release in November, and now it appears that could be coming to fruition. The ports will release on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (exclusive the Rockstar Games Launcher) in 2021, and mobile iOS and Android ports will release in the first half of 2022. In a follow-up thread on Twitter, Rockstar thanked players for their support and noted the upcoming GTA 3 anniversary, suggesting more information about the GTA remaster collection could be revealed sometime around then.

Later this month marks a very special anniversary for Rockstar Games: 20 years since the original release of Grand Theft Auto III.

As it’s coming to Switch, the GTA: The Trilogy release will mark the first time games in the series have come to a Nintendo console since Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. While the remaster trilogy could make the three classic games more easily accessible for some, Game Informer reports all existing versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas will be removed from digital. Rockstar is presumably knee-deep on development of Grand Theft Auto V’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports, and very possibly GTA 6, so it’s not clear how extensive its updates to its older games might be.

Despite Rockstar’s new information on GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, it had nothing official to share on GTA 6. GTA 5’s new-gen ports were delayed from November 2021 to March 2022 recently, so it seems this new collection could be filling its place in the release schedule. There are rumors that Rockstar will be using these remasters as a way to gauge interest for remasters for other past games. Rockstar is reportedly circling a remaster of Red Dead Redemption, though it’s unclear if the developer would put in a greater level of effort for that remaster. If the GTA remaster trilogy is a sales success, it’s possible more classic Rockstar games could get the remaster treatment in the coming years.
