Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption II are the two latest games from mega-publisher and developer, Rockstar Games. Both have achieved immense critical praise and sales that very few games could. Grand Theft Auto V is still dominating sales charts despite releasing in 2013 while Red Dead Redemption II’s impact on the industry is still talked about.

Both games are strong contenders for the greatest in the medium and are easily the cream of the crop for Rockstar as a whole. Here are five reasons why GTA V is Rockstar’s best game and another five as to why that title should go to Red Dead Redemption II.

10 GTA V: The Online Component Is Still Successful

While a good single-player is one of the main selling points for any Rockstar game, multiplayer always keeps these games living longer. Grand Theft Auto Online was added shortly after GTA V’s release, with some issues that have since been fixed, and is now among the most popular aspects of any game released this console generation.

Being able to complete a campaign with friends that involves the likes of planning heists, running casinos, racing and even Mad Max-style demolition derbies, is always fun. Red Dead Online is also fun but has a long way to go before it reaches the level of GTA Online.

While GTA V’s score by Tangerine Dream is amazing in its own right, the licensed tracks make up a variety of the music when players are driving. Every radio station across the fictional city of Los Santos.

Artists like Phil Collins, Danny Brown, NWA, Twin Shadow, Elton John, Waylon Jennings, Freddie Gibbs, CHVRCHES and so many more. It is the perfect soundtrack for a night drive around the city or for getting chased by the cops after a successful heist.

7 Red Dead: Much Better Original Music

Woody Jackson’s original score for Red Dead Redemption II is among the best in the medium. Songs like “Outlaws from the West” and “American Venom” punctuate already great missions and heighten the experience much further than most games.

There are also plenty of original songs from other artists, such as R&B legend D’Angelo lending his talents for the ballad “Unshaken” or country music superstar Willi Nelson singing “Cruel World.” These make the game feel much more cinematic and emotional overall.

6 GTA V: Runs Much Better On Modern Consoles

Grand Theft Auto V was originally released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, where it was a fairly impressive feat. Once the game was ported over to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One it sported some visual upgrades and runs significantly better than Red Dead Redemption II does.

Landscapes look like paintings and facial animations are improved substantially from Grand Theft Auto V’s. It’s a gorgeous game that manages to surprise at every turn.

The attention to detail is also impressive, as everything is rendered to perfection, with the first-person view adding extra depth in the world.

4 GTA V: The Humor Is Much More Pronounced

Grand Theft Auto V’s story is not the best in the series but it succeeds in terms of its characters and humor. Franklin, Michael, and Trevor are all well-written characters that each have their own great scenes. A lot of the humor also derives from smart satire, such as the main story’s overall anti-capitalist message. There are also constant jabs at American culture and the idea of celebrity.

In a world where Marvel Films often get criticized for seemingly pro-imperialist messages, it is rare to see a billion-dollar franchise so openly mock the process in which it makes its money. Also, those talk radio stations have some of the best social commentary in any game.

3 Red Dead: The Storytelling Is Much Stronger

Calling a video game story “good” is harder these days because games are usually judged differently than films. While most video game stories are great, most feel like they are mimicking or paying homage to other films. Stuff like Uncharted and Tomb Raider are great but are clearly inspired by Indiana Jones.

Red Dead Redemption II’s story about a gang who’s ambition oversteps its reach is among the best in the medium because it feels cinematic and artful. The writing is almost Shakspearean, with the voice cast giving thoughtful and emotional performances that are unmatched by any other game.

2 GTA V: More Accessible And Fun To Play

With a name like Grand Theft Auto, people will know what they are getting into. It’s a game about driving and causing mayhem in a city. There are no limitations and everything is much more fun and easier to grasp.

The action moves at a quick pace, with countless side activities to take part in, It is definitely the kind of game to keep anyone busy for a few years.

1 Red Dead: Much More Groundbreaking And Experimental

Red Dead Redemption II has a feature in which holding down the left trigger lets players interact with almost anything. This ranges from talking to people to picking up almost anything in the world. It is something that most games should copy immediately, as it completely changes how interaction should work.

Honestly, it feels like Rockstar learned what they did from the GTA games and other titles like Shenmue or The Elder Scrolls to deliver a method of interaction unlike anything else.
