A series of variant covers for Green Arrow Spectacular 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 have been released, encompassing the iconic eras of the Emerald Archer. From the Golden Age to his modern reinvention, the upcoming one-shot is paying tribute to Oliver Queen’s evolution in the DC Universe.

As Green Arrow’s 80th birthday approaches since his introduction in 1941, fans can reflect on his history and see how far he’s come as a superhero. Arguably, Oliver has a more interesting past than other members of the Justice League, starting out as an homage to Robin Hood and later establishing his own specific voice. The Emerald Archer’s stories have ranged from being tongue-in-cheek by including “boxing glove arrows” to being serious in providing social commentary on matters of racism and drug abuse. A massive one-shot that will soon be released promises to acknowledge the archer hero’s roots and where creators have since taken him, as he currently heads the Justice League.

Following the announcement that Green Arrow’s celebratory one-shot would take inspiration from various beloved iterations, a selection of variant covers have been unveiled, illustrated by seminal DC artists. As revealed exclusively by Comic Book Resources, the eight variant covers that will accompany Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 spotlight Oliver Queen’s legacy from decade to decade. Michael Cho illustrates his beginnings in the 1940s as Green Arrow and his sidekick Speedy shoot a variety of arrows, each with their own unique gimmick. Meanwhile, Daniel Warren Johnson brings the Emerald Archer into the Golden Age with a clear homage to the iconic climax of King Kong. Moving into the 1960s, prolific artist Neal Adams pairs Oliver with Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern, as they shared adventures illustrated by the artist at this point in their history that redefined their characters.

Derrick Chew’s variant cover returns to the ‘70s as he touches on another integral partnership, which is the romantic crimefighting relationship of Green Arrow and Black Canary. Brad Anderson and Gary Frank reminisce over the nostalgia of the ‘80s by including Shado. Howard Porter and Ivan Plascencia bring fans back to the daring era of the ‘90s, as Connor Hawke, Roy Harper, and Black Canary pay tribute to the fallen hero as he watches over their crusade. Jen Bartel showcases the early 2000s as Oliver’s new lease on his superhero persona is underway. Finally, Simone Di Meo brings readers back to the sleek style of Rebirth and features Black Canary, Diggle, and Red Arrow fighting at Green Arrow’s side.

The celebratory one-shot is stacked with talent, many of whom have contributed to Green Arrow’s legacy as writers and artists. Just as the variant covers tease, Oliver’s sidekicks and crimefighting partners including Black Canary, Arsenal, Connor Hawke, Red Arrow, and Speedy will make appearances. Villains such as Count Vertigo and Onomatopoeia will show up, and now it might be a good bet that Shado will play a part as well. It would feel particularly heartfelt if the stories featured were each set in the decades represented by the newly released variant covers. DC will release Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 on June 29.
