Guy Gardner, one of the longest-serving and strongest-willed members of the Green Lantern Corps, was recently revealed to be the One Punch Man of the DC Comics universe. While it’s not something he’s chosen to make a big deal of, Gardner has been working to make sure that people will no longer hear his name and the phrase “one punch” and be reminded of one of the most shameful moments of his career as a superhero, instead of thinking of him as the hero who can take down any threat with a single strike.

First appearing in Green Lantern #59 in 1968, Guy Gardner was revealed to be the man who might have been chosen to be Earth’s first inductee into the Green Lantern Corps instead of Hal Jordan, had Jordan not been closer when a dying Green Lantern named Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth and instructed his power ring to seek out the closest worthy successor. This knowledge, coupled with a lifetime of resentments born of being the least-favored son of an abusive family, left Guy with a major chip on his shoulder and a lot to prove when he was finally given a chance at joining the Green Lanterns and found himself in the shadow of Hal Jordan, who was viewed even then as “the greatest of Green Lanterns.” It also pushed Guy to challenge Batman’s authority when Guy decided that he should be leading the Justice League instead of the Dark Knight Detective, resulting in Guy being knocked out by one expertly applied punch.

The incident cemented Guy’s reputation as a major jerk with most of his fellow Justice League members, but it also inspired Guy to better himself. The shame of being known as “One Punch Gardner” among his colleagues drove Guy to change the nature of the nickname, pushing him to start fighting smarter and using his Green Lantern ring for more than making big constructs and healing his wounds. His ultimate goal was to be known throughout the universe as the man who could “one-punch knock-out” any threat, so Guy started thinking of just how he could use his ring to take out various enemies with just one punch.

Dark Nights: Death Metal Metaverse’s End #1 by James Tynion IV and Juan Gedeon revealed Guy’s struggle and showed the end result of it, as he led a team of heroes to the corrupted world of Earth-X; an alternate reality where the Axis Powers won World War II. As his colleagues raced to evacuate the planet before it could be destroyed by the goddess Perpetua, Guy faced Ubermensch, the Superman of Earth-X, in a one-on-one battle. Showing a level of foresight that would have stunned most of his allies on Prime Earth, Guy used his ring to replicate the radioactive frequency of Earth-X’s Kryptonite, as he placed an enlarged emerald fist around his own and sent the Nazi superman flying.

It remains to be seen if Guy will truly be able to change his reputation outside of the Green Lantern Corps and make the nickname given to him mean what he wants it to. Yet his drive and desire to better himself are admirable, even if Gardner’s confidence in himself is not entirely merited. While it’s debatable as to whether or not Guy could take on Satima in a one-on-one fight, if there’s anyone in the DC Comics Universe stubborn enough to defeat the real One Punch Man, it’s Guy Gardner.
