Owen Hunt might not be a raging fan-favorite in the long-running hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy but he has been one of the main characters since the show’s 5th season.

He started out as the quick-witted, striking trauma surgeon who had served in the military, although his arc over the years has mostly been romantic, as he got involved with several doctors like Cristina, Amelia, and Teddy. Like everyone else on the show, Owen has done a few things he should be proud of, and others, not so much.

10 Shameless: Cheating On Cristina

Owen and Cristina were together for a long time, the second lead couple of the series after Derek and Meredith. However, although they did truly love one another, their romance went through several ups and downs and finally hit a rocky patch that eventually led to their divorce.

Cristina went ahead with the abortion against Owen’s wishes, and although she had every right to do so, it did hurt Owen deeply. The damage to their relationship became almost irreparable, and Owen went and cheated on Cristina with a random woman at a bar. While this was uncharacteristic of him, it was pretty low to somehow take revenge on Cristina by being unfaithful to her.

9 Proud: His Past As A Military Surgeon

Owen is, of course, a world-class trauma surgeon and had served as a military doctor for several years before joining Seattle Grace.

Owen helped a lot of his comrades while serving in Iraq, and was shown to have been there for his dying friend, an incident that contributed to his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As a veteran doctor, Owen most definitely has a past to be proud of.

8 Shameless: Putting The Doctors To Boise On The Chopper

Owen let the doctors headed to Boise get into a chopper from a dubious charter company.

Although this was purely a mistake, Owen’s negligence was most certainly somewhat responsible for the doctors including Meredith, Cristina, Derek, going through that horrifying tragedy. Neither Lexie nor Mark survived the crash, Arizona lost a leg and the tragedy left an indelible mark on the others forever.

7 Proud: Helping Cristina Through Her PTSD

Owen was by Cristina’s side each time she went through her own PTSD. Cristina had operated on Derek at gunpoint and saved his life in the season 6 finale, “Death And All His Friends” after which she went through a period of self-destruction. Although it was Derek who actually brought her back from the brink with his patience, Owen was there for her too.

Again later, Owen helped her deal with the acute shock and trauma following the devastating plane crash of season 8. He washed her hair for her and just stayed by her until she eventually felt safe enough to open up.

6 Shameless: Breaking Up With Beth Over Email

Owen did not even bother to inform his fiancé Beth that he had returned from Iraq. Even worse, he had apparently broken up with her over a two-line email, instead of ever telling her face to face.

Owen’s treatment of Beth was quite atrocious. She might not have been the right person for him but she surely didn’t deserve to be slighted the way she was.

5 Proud: Adopting Little Leo

Owen always longed to have children and a family of his own. He became a foster parent for a baby boy called Leo and although he and Amelia had quite a time with the little guy, he seemed to make a good father after all.

Owen has always been shown to place a lot of value on family and relationships, so it makes sense that he should have one of his own, with his daughter Allison, Leo, and of course, Teddy.

4 Shameless: Trying To Sabotage His Sister’s Dreams

Owen’s overprotectiveness towards his sister crossed a line when he decided to sabotage her dreams of becoming a flight surgeon. Owen’s sister, Megan, was his colleague and a trauma surgeon in Iraq.

She had done extremely well in her military start ranking and should have been recommended for flight surgeon, something she expected Owen to recommend her for. However, Owen clearly didn’t recommend her presumably because he wanted to keep her safe.

3 Proud: Being A Good Mentor

Owen might have been a bit underrated but he was quite a successful Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace. Unlike Derek who resigned from his post after a fair bit of drama, Owen stayed under the radar, until of course, the entire nightmare of the hospital going bankrupt.

Although Richard, and now Miranda, get a lot of attention as the Chief, Owen too had done a pretty commendable job for several years, holding the hospital together. He was also responsible for mentoring other young doctors such as April Kepner who became an excellent trauma surgeon under his guidance.

2 Shameless: Hurting His Mother

Owen hurt his mom when he judged her for being with a younger man. Her boyfriend John was a firefighter and much younger than Evelyn, which led Owen to believe that she was being exploited.

Owen’s insensitive behavior hurt Evelyn to the extent that she broke up with John. He did eventually understand his mistake but he really needn’t have thought that he needed to protect his mother who was genuinely happy with a good, decent man.

1 Proud: Helping Amelia Through Derek’s Death

Owen was supportive of Amelia when she finally broke down after Derek’s untimely and shocking death. Amelia took a while to process her grief as she continued to be in denial about Derek’s death.

The latter had practically brought her up and she looked up to him, in spite of their differences. She also relapsed into her drug use and it was Owen who helped her get past that terrible phase.
