Grey’s Anatomy has had its fair dose of tragedies, and one of the most unforgettable ones is the plane crash, which saw the death of two beloved characters, while the rest struggled to recover physically and mentally. Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy debuted on ABC in 2005, and even though it started as a mid-season replacement, it was so well-received by critics and viewers that it has lived on for over 10 seasons and shows no signs of stopping soon, even if most of its original cast is now gone.

Like any other medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy follows the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings as they juggle their professional and personal lives, which often overlap and make way for a lot of drama inside and outside the hospital. Led by Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who viewers have seen go from intern to head of general surgery, Grey’s Anatomy has seen its main characters go through all types of obstacles, both personal and professional, with one often affecting the other. The series has become known for having some truly tragic storylines, including a shooting at Seattle Grace Hospital, Meredith almost drowning to death, and a plane crash.

Grey’s Anatomy season 8 left viewers with a broken heart after the plane Meredith, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), and Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) were flying in crashed. The team was on their way to assist the surgery of conjoined twins at a hospital in Boise, but they never made it there. Sadly, Lexie was crushed by a piece of the plane and died minutes later, though not before Mark could say goodbye to her, while the rest struggled to survive until they were rescued. Season 9 premiere episode revealed that Mark’s injuries were a lot more serious than initially believed, and had to be taken off of life support. The rest of the team became known as the “Seattle Grace Five”, and while they survived the accident, they had to deal with a lot of injuries, both physical and mental. Here’s how the plane crash impacted Grey’s Anatomy’s “Seattle Grace Five”.

Meredith Grey

Out of all the “Seattle Grace Five”, Meredith Grey had the least serious injuries, at least physically. When she woke up in the middle of the forest, she was pulled up by Cristina and was able to walk around. Meredith had scalp laceration and a minor leg wound, as a small, sharp piece of metal was sticking in her leg, which she pulled out and stopped the bleeding by tying a piece of fabric around her leg, right above the wound. The wound on her head was nothing serious, and the bleeding eventually stopped. Meredith was more concerned to know where Derek was, as well as Lexie when Cristina told her the back of the plane came off, as Lexie was sitting on the back of the plane. Along with the rest, Meredith filed a lawsuit against the plane company, but their attorney informed them they would be pursuing action against the hospital. This resulted in them being awarded $15 million each and the hospital going bankrupt, which was eventually saved with the help of the Harper Avery Foundation, and so the Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital became the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Derek Shepherd

In another part of the forest, Derek Shepherd woke up and found himself unable to move his right hand as it was stuck in a large piece of metal. In order to break free and look for the rest of the team, he took a stone and smashed his right hand. Although that allowed him to get up, it also resulted in broken bones and nerve damage. When he finally reunited with Meredith and Cristina, the former attended his wound and used a safety pin to close the incision left by the piece of metal. Back at Seattle Grace, Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) was able to fix his hand for the most part, with the help of a nerve from the leg of his sister, Liz. Although Derek thought we would never be able to operate again, he recovered after a long fight and taught interns in the skills lab in the meantime.

Cristina Yang

When Meredith woke up, Cristina Yang was in shock, mumbling that she lost her shoe and had to find it (and she eventually did). She then yelled at Meredith that the plane crashed and Derek was sucked out of the side when it hit the tress and the back of the plane came off. She also yelled at Arizona to shut up, who was screaming in pain and fear. When it comes to physical injuries, Cristina had a dislocated shoulder, which Marked helped her pop back in so she could help him free Lexie, and later made a sling for her arm. Cristina also helped the pilot, Jerry, by stabilizing his spine and helped Meredith look after Derek’s wound. While she tried to start a fire, she urged Mark to help her but noticed he wasn’t reacting. Cristina then learned he had a massive cardiac tamponade and instructed Meredith on how to do a pericardiocentesis. She was the only one who was awake when they were rescued and continued fighting the doctors at Boise Hospital, who ended up sedating her and tying her to the bed, and Owen was later told she was in a state of reactive psychosis. As a result of it, she refused to speak, her sight was blurry, and sound was muted in her ears. It took her a long time to recover, but she eventually did and left the series in season 10.

Arizona Robbins

Arizona Robbins spent a long time screaming in pain until Cristina told her to shut up. The reason for Arizona’s pain was her leg, as she had an open femur fracture, along with facial lacerations. When she realized her femur was sticking out, she began laughing out of shock, and with the supplies Cristina got from the plane, she was able to splint her leg, and she later began coughing blood. Back at Seattle Grace, Callie took care of the infection on her leg, but amputation was the only solution. She made Callie promise to not cut her leg and instead find another way to save it, but when she started crashing because of the infection, Alex Karev was ordered by Callie to cut her leg. Arizona became depressed after that, and her relationship with Callie started to deteriorate, as she blamed her for the amputation.

Mark Sloan

Mark Sloan was part of the “Seattle Grace Five” as he made it back to Seattle Grace Hospital, where everything got more complicated. As mentioned above, following Lexie’s death, Cristina realized that Mark’s injuries were not visible, as he had a cardiac tamponade, which is fluid surrounding the heart. Cristina instructed Meredith on how to drain his pericardial sac in order to relieve pressure and buy some time, which allowed him to make it back to the hospital with the rest of the team. However, his condition worsened and he fell into a coma, and after 30 days, he was taken off of life support, with Derek and Callie by his side.
