Grey’s Anatomy could be coming to an end, as the current season finale is being written as the potential series finale. The medical drama, created by Shonda Rhimes, is currently in its seventeenth season, incorporating the current pandemic into its storyline. The ongoing pandemic is also why its current season is only sixteen episodes instead of its usual full season of twenty-four episodes. Already almost halfway through, the show is coming back from a three-month winter hiatus for its mid-season premiere crossing over with a storyline with the firefighter spinoff drama, Station 19.

The show has already aired six episodes and is in production for future episodes with a finale date probably around the middle of May. It continues to be one of the most successful, long-running television shows ever and a major hit with streaming on Netflix. The series also continues to attract new viewers and is currently the number one primetime drama on ABC. The show’s leading star, Ellen Pompeo, is coming to the end of a tw0-season deal, and showrunner, Krista Vernoff, is also in negotiations.

Per THR, with no official deals having been made yet and the finale getting closer, Vernoff is planning to write the last episode of season seventeen to serve as both a season finale if Grey’s Anatomy comes back, and as a series finale. The negotiations for renewal have been in discussion for months with ABC Signature and Disney. Due to the uncertainty, Vernoff is forced to plan the storylines that will provide satisfaction to the fans regardless of the eventual decision. Vernoff has also requested that ABC let her know the final decision ahead of production on the finale, going on to state:

I’m planning a season and a finale that could function as either a season finale or a series finale. I’m planning for both contingencies and it’s hard and it’s not ideal. It’s not where I wish we were. I’ve told them that I have to know before I’m making the finale what we’re making, because there are a couple of character threads that will change. I’ve got plans for both contingencies. Either there will be closure or I will build something in that allows me to have a bit of a cliffhanger and a thread for next season.

It is unfortunate that Vernoff has to be put in a position where she as the showrunner does not know whether Grey’s Anatomy will see another season or not. With Grey’s Anatomy being so successful, the ending of the show has always come down to a creative decision and contract negotiations, rather than ratings. Shonda Rhimes has consistently stated that the series will end when Pompeo no longer wants to continue. Pompeo’s two-year deal back in 2017 made her the highest-paid actress for a television series.

Hopefully everything will work out with the negotiations with Vernoff and Pompeo. Pompeo has continuously been the one constant of Grey’s Anatomy throughout its entire run, otherwise the show would not have survived as long as it has. With the finale edging closer to the date, a decision must be made shortly. For a show that has been on for almost two decades, Grey’s Anatomy deserves to have a satisfying ending, regardless if that ending is final.
