Grimes has leaked some pivotal information about her character in Cyberpunk 2077 in a brief YouTube Live, giving away some spoilers for the delayed game. The signer-songwriter and producer just released her newest album after nearly an entire year of teasing themes and dropping singles, releasing Miss Anthropocene on February 21, 2020. To celebrate the launch, Grimes made a livestream in which she answered questions from fans and discussed the overarching story of her new album.
Grimes won’t be the only celebrity present in Cyberpunk 2077. Keanu Reeves, who is once again in the limelight of media and pop culture thanks to upcoming movie roles, will play Johnny Silverhand, a main character in the game. It was announced in December that Grimes would be a part of the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack along with other popular artists such as Run the Jewels and ASAP Rocky. Grimes would also reveal that she’d be more deeply involved in the game, suggesting that she would voice a punk-rock-looking character.
According to Polygon, in the YouTube Live Grimes held for her new album the singer also began discussing her character’s backstory in Cyberpunk 2077. Grimes will be playing the problematic pop star known as Lizzy Wizzy. While players already knew the game would feature some pretty dark elements, Grimes has confirmed just how dark the game may actually get. Lizzy Wizzy commits suicide in the middle of her concert. According to Grimes the character receives emergency surgery over her entire body with cybernetics and is transformed into a cyborg. Grimes then expressed how Lizzy continues the show post-surgery, making the performance the “greatest piece of performance art ever made.”
Polygon has also reported that someone on Reddit pointed out a headline caught from a still of the game in the original 2018 E3 demo for Cyberpunk 2077. In the still players can see a giant screen that looks to be reporting the news. There is a headline that reads “Breaking News! Death at Lizzy Wizzy concert.” It appears developer CD Projekt Red has had Grimes’ character in mind for quite some time.
Grimes is the perfect candidate to play Lizzy Wizzy and to be in the Cyberpunk 2077 world. The pop star Lizzy Wizzy and her controversial “performance” sounds exactly like something Grimes would come up with for one her own songs. As a character in Night City, it’ll be interesting to see if Lizzy Wizzy gets any more promotional coverage. Keanu is getting a Funko! Pop for his character, so maybe players will see Lizzy Wizzy toys and figurines eventually as well.
