Screenshots of a heavily modded version of Grand Theft Auto V make it look like a cyberpunk game worthy of competing with Cyberpunk 2077. GTA V, like fellow open world games Skyrim and Fallout 4, is an eminently moddable game, and content creators have had a lot of fun seeing just what they can do to the sandbox crime simulator. Earlier this year, for instance, one player added a “Mega Ramp” mod to launch trucks from truly monumental heights.
Open world games are very prominent these days; Grand Theft Auto has been competing with games like Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn in terms of the breadth of the game world and the amount of freedom offered to the player. But one open world game is lingering on the horizon that looks prepared to make a huge splash in the genre, and that’s Cyberpunk 2077. Developer CD Projekt Red has already ably demonstrated its open world chops with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, and the new game’s gritty, neon-tinged setting of Night City has been enticing players for years now. The developer has proven on multiple occasions that it’s fully prepared to stuff this world full of interesting details and sidequests, and to bring its narrative to life with a preposterous amount of dialogue.
But thanks to mods, fans who are impatient for the release of Cyberpunk 2077 can turn to Grand Theft Auto V instead. Twitter user Petri Levälahti recorded some gorgeous screenshots using a modded version of the game. The mods have turned the fictional but realistic city of Los Santos into a cyberpunk dystopia, very reminiscent of Night City. Levälahti has decked out the characters in appropriately futuristic fashion, incorporating sci-fi headsets and powerful firearms. The graphics steal the show, though. These screenshots are almost indistinguishable from the base game. While GTA V’s 2013 graphics hold up remarkably well today, the graphics that Levälahti has achieved through his mods are on a whole other level, and look like something one would see on a next-generation console.

It stands to reason that the more popular a game is, the more buckwild mods will be made for it. It’s this logic that put a whole Mario Kart track in Breath of the Wild, for instance. And Grand Theft Auto V is the second best-selling video game of all time, a title it has retained now for seven years. Not only has it had the fame to draw in modders, it’s had a long time to let them do their work. As Levälahti himself enthusiastically remarks, “The mods are running free, they’re running wild.”
It’s no stretch to call Cyberpunk 2077 one of the most anticipated video games in recent memory. There likely aren’t many video game fans in the world who don’t have their eye on that prestigious game. As its release draws near, plenty of gamers are probably itching to get a jump start on the cyberpunk feeling. Thanks to these mods, fans can do that without ever having to step outside of Grand Theft Auto V.
