Grand Theft Auto Online continues to see support from Rockstar, this time in the form of The Contract, a new storyline for GTA Online featuring returning characters who appear to look aged compared to their Grand Theft Auto V counterparts, among them Franklin’s faithful dog, Chop. The Contract is a major content update coming December 15 to GTA Online, featuring a new adventure, new music, and new weapons and vehicles. This update is gearing up to be the first major content update to directly reference the events of GTA 5, focusing on what Franklin got up to after the Union Depository heist.
The penultimate main story mission in GTA 5 saw the characters Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa, and Trevor Phillips pull off a major heist on the Union Depository, a large bank in the GTA Universe that houses a large amount of gold that the player characters abscond with. Heists were some of GTA 5’s best missions, and the final single-player heist was no different, providing players with the largest payout of all prior heists. This new story update to GTA Online finally confirms what Franklin did with his ill-gotten gains, investing them into a “celebrity solutions” agency.
The Contract sees the GTA Online protagonist brought into this agency by Lamar Davis, friend of Franklin in GTA 5’s story, and the first contact the protagonist gets in GTA Online. This marks Franklin’s first appearance in GTA Online, as well as the return of fan-favorite character Chop, an adorable rottweiler dog given to Franklin by Lamar early in the story for GTA 5. Players have taken note that Chop in the promotional material for the update appears much older than he did in GTA 5, with thinning, grayer fur, and a more elderly dog appearance, which may lead some to wonder why this change took place.
The Contract Takes Place Eight Years After GTA 5’s Ending
GTA Online has a confusing timeline, and the lack of much explanation surrounding it may have led some players to now be puzzled as to why more characters from the story are now making appearances. Prior to 2017, the events of GTA Online all took place prior to GTA 5’s story mode. However, following 2017’s Gunrunning update to GTA Online, it has been confirmed that the events seen in the multiplayer now correlate to real-world years. Since GTA 5 is set in 2013, GTA Online now takes place afterward, with Michael, Trevor and Franklin now presumably all at different points in their lives. As a result, Chop is now eight years older, which is why he’s looking more mature than he did in GTA 5’s story.
Altering Chop’s age shows a clear amount of care on the part of Rockstar. The company could’ve easily imported Chop’s old model into GTA Online, but to acknowledge the time skip between GTA 5 and The Contract by making them into a mature dog shows an attention to detail that was severely lacking in the failure that was the GTA Trilogy. The Contract, featuring Dr. Dre in a major role, is gearing up to be the continuation to GTA 5 many players were hoping Grand Theft Auto Online would be, finally answering questions regarding what major characters have been up to since the events of the story mode.
