Rumors of the Grand Theft Auto PS2 trilogy (GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas) remake are gaining even more momentum following teases from both Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive. Take-Two noted in a recent earnings call that it has a handful of upcoming re-releases of old games on the horizon, which would compliment Grand Theft Auto 3’s 20th anniversary.

Rockstar has already confirmed that Grand Theft Auto V re-releases this November, which identifies one of Take-Two’s teased titles. Although Rockstar hasn’t fully detailed the new version, it will boast a variety of visual and technical improvements to bring the game to the standards of the current-gen consoles. It seems possible that Rockstar might debut a trailer and go further in-depth on the new version this summer, but the studio may also be juggling another project.

Take-Two Interactive confirmed that it will release 6 new iterations of older titles by March 31, 2022 in its earnings call, as reported by Daniel Ahmad (via Dexerto). One of these projects is confirmed to be Grand Theft Auto V. Previous rumors suggest that the GTA PS2 trilogy is being remade as part of a way to celebrate Grand Theft Auto 3’s upcoming 20th anniversary in October. Nothing has been confirmed, but this only adds fuel to the fire. Whether or not Take-Two would count the trilogy as one title or three different games is unclear, but fans believe the rumors are starting to gain some truth.

Take Two says it plans to release 62 titles in the next 3 years. Between April 1, 2021 – March 31, 2022 the company plans to release 21 games, 4 of which are core titles. In the two year period after this, the company plans to release 19 core games and 4 mid-core games. pic.twitter.com/jIK1xpYCFS

6 new iterations of previously released titles before March 31, 2022. Hmm, this and “fun surprises” for GTA III 20th anniversary. Things are getting interesting. https://t.co/ZNlfOwPf4Q

Rockstar doesn’t typically attend E3, so it seems likely that any announcement would be made during a time where there aren’t any significant events taking up the industry news cycles, if it does happen. It’s also possible that the alleged remaster is coming next year, but it’s unclear whether or not Rockstar wants to time it with the anniversary.

The acclaimed developer also confirmed that it would have “fun surprises” for GTA 3’s anniversary, which added more fuel to the fire. Rockstar has suggested that some of it will come in the form of GTA Online content, but it’s also entirely probable that there’s something much bigger on the horizon. As of right now, no one actually knows whether or not this will come to fruition, so take it with a grain of salt, but there are clues that seem to suggest the PS2 Grand Theft Auto trilogy is about to have a huge comeback later this year.
