Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy exceeded plenty of expectations with its compelling story and loveable characters, but mostly because of the combat system. Many were skeptical about primarily using Star-Lord with the other guardians helping out on the side, but Eidos-Montreal developed an amazing combat system.

There isn’t a complex leveling system in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which makes upgrading Star-Lord’s perks a bit easier. Throughout the game, you’ll find basic and advanced components to use on workbenches to unlock new perks. Workbenches are found throughout most levels, but there’s also one stationed on the Milano. Of all the available perks, these are the best ones that you should look to unlock as soon as possible.

10 Tactical Scan

Throughout the game, there will be moments where Star-Lord will have to use his Visor to scan the surrounding area to find a way to progress forward. The Visor scan is not only a helpful tool in simply learning more about various objects, but it also comes in handy during battle.

By unlocking Tactical Scan, Star-Lord can scan enemies and find out their main weaknesses in battle. When you scan an enemy, time will slow so you don’t have to worry about possibly getting blind-sided by someone else. Tactical Scan can be useful, though it’s not as important as other perks because you can see what elements enemies are weak to on the left side of their health bar.

9 Low Life Buff

Fighting in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy can be pretty hectic with tons of enemies shooting from all directions. You’ll encounter enemies sniping from a distance, firing assault rifles upfront, and also enemies who want to beat the crap out of you with their bare hands.

If you utilize Star-Lord’s dodging, you’ll be in good shape regarding preserving your health, but some battles might be a bit overwhelming. Low Life Buff doubles Star-Lord’s firing rate when his Health drops below 25 percent, making this a rather useful perk if enemy forces are getting the better of you.

8 Charged Shot

Other than the standard health bar, enemies can also become staggered, which will leave them open to a powerful attack from Star-Lord. Charged Shot allows the guardian to charge his blasters to inflict both physical and stagger damage to an enemy, which will increase the stagger bar to induce his special attack.

When facing off against multiple enemies, using the Charged Shot might be a bit anti-productive because you’re reducing your overall fire rate. But when fighting against the giant robots that the Church of Truth uses, this technique will definitely come in handy. Enemies that have multiple health bars can be quickly defeated by focusing on staggering them and performing the more powerful special attack.

7 Extra Shield

Unless you’re playing on a higher difficulty, it’s extremely rare for Star-Lord to fall in battle. But in order to further prevent that from happening, make sure to unlock Extra Shield from the workbench.

Extra Shield will increase Star-Lord’s total shield points by 50 percent, making the guardian pretty hard to take down. We recommend focusing on adding the extra shield as early in the game as possible, so you don’t have to worry as much about possibly dying in battle.

Adding 50 percent extra shield can be the difference maker between surviving an onslaught of converted Church of Truth enemies or succumbing to them. Star-Lord is already more than capable of staying alive through most skirmishes, but it doesn’t hurt to add that extra layer of protection with the Extra Shields perk.

6 Extra Health

Similar to Extra Shield, Extra Health increases Star-Lord’s total health points by 25 percent. It might not be as much as the 50 percent increase as the added shields, but the added health will be highly beneficial in keeping Peter Quill alive in battle.

In most battles, Star-Lord’s mobility makes it fairly easy to avoid attacks if he’s in danger of dying. And with his long-range blasters, you can even hang around the outskirts and fire from a safe distance, while also utilizing the other guardians’ abilities and scooping up health packs from afar.

5 Shield Restoration Delay

Unlike his health bar, Star-Lord doesn’t need to find shield packs in a battle to restore any lost shields. By simply standing off to the side and avoiding damage, his shields will automatically recharge. Unlocking Shield Restoration Delay will speed up the overall process in how fast his shields will regenerate in combat.

In most cases, Star-Lord won’t be in danger of falling in battle, but sometimes things can get a bit intense. Having Shield Restoration Delay unlocked from the early goings can further help prevent him from dying, especially with knowing when to back off from ensuing enemies.

4 Shield Restoration Speed

When compared to Shield Restoration Delay, it would seem like these two perks are the same with slightly varying names. Think of Shield Restoration Speed as an added layer for Star-Lord’s ability to regain his shields during combat.

Shield Restoration Speed will increase his shield regeneration by 33 percent per second. So, if you find yourself under heavy pressure, try to utilize Star-Lord’s impeccable dodging and the other guardians’ abilities to divert the enemy’s attention and fire, while he’s able to safely regain his lost shields.

3 Perfect Dodge

Combat in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is very fluid and smooth. While Star-Lord can take an impressive amount of damage before faltering, you don’t want to push your luck. Peter Quill can hover in the air or simply run away from enemies, but neither of those beats his Perfect Dodge.

Unlocking Perfect Dodge will slow time when Star-Lord dodges an enemy attack at the precise moment. Because of how hectic battles can be, slowing time down can give you those extra precious seconds to plan what your next move will be. Even if you time it wrong and time does not slow, dodging in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a useful tool in general and should be implemented as much as possible in combat.

2 Charge Consumption

Other than the standard blasts his guns shoot, Star-Lord’s blasters also have Elemental attributes. There are four elementals that Peter Quill will naturally unlock throughout the game: Ice, Lightning, Wind, and Fire. Certain enemies in the game are weak toward these elements and Star-Lord can stagger them with enough elemental damage.

Charge Consumption reduces the amount of Charge needed to fire the Elemental Guns, which will increase their overall usage. Star-Lord’s elemental damage is a major key to success in most battles, so being able to increase the use of them will make your time in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy that much easier.

1 Rapid Reload

Star-Lord’s blasters in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy do not require ammo, but they can become overheated when used consistently. Rapid Reload is the first perk unlocked in the workbench tutorial, and for good reason.

When Star-Lord overheats his blasters, instead of having to wait for the guns to cool down there will be green zones for you to select to cancel the overheat and deal extra damage with the corresponding shot. Not only does this technique reduce the time needed to continue firing, but the added bonus of extra damage makes this the best perk in the game.
