When Marvel made the announcement that they were making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, fans were not sure what to expect. The characters involved were not widely known outside of comic book circles. But true to form, the MCU turned those characters into household names by putting out one of the best films in the franchise.

A big part of the franchise’s of that success were side-characters like Ophelia Lovibond’s Carina who worked for The Collector in both Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. She might not be the most recognizable character but she still played an important role.

10 She’s Krylorian

The Krylorians come up with some frequency, particularly in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. A Krylorian woman is on Peter Quill’s ship when he steals the orb. Many Krylorians are seen on Xandar, including Rhomann Dey who was married to a Krylorian woman and has a daughter with her.

Unfortunately, their beauty and peaceful nature often led criminals to take Krylorians as slaves. Carina was a prime example of this as she was The Collector’s slave, the second Krylorian woman known to have served him in that role.

9 Part Of The Collection

The Collector didn’t get his name by having two artifacts on a bookshelf. His collection was massive, housing a variety of objects and sentient lifeforms. As fans found out at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, that also included Howard the Duck.

Carina was more aware of this fact than anyone else, but as The Collector’s slave she was ostensibly part of that collection. She might have been able to leave the facility but there was only one way out of The Collector’s service, an option she eventually exercised.

8 Hated The Collector

Unsurprisingly, Carina hated The Collector with a great deal of passion. It’s hard to blame her considering she was his slave and he treated her incredibly poorly. The look of disdain for him on her face was hard to ignore, yet The Collector did.

This became particularly evident when he pointed out his previous Krylorian slave who was already housed in his collection. If Carina upset The Collector that would have been her fate, as well. No one wants that kind of threat looming over their head.

7 Sought Freedom

As one would expect, Carina desired freedom from her master. It really shouldn’t come as a surprise since the likely end to her time with The Collector would have been death or imprisonment. Neither option inspires loyalty.

It’s hard to say how long she was plotting against The Collector but Carina certainly took advantage of the appearance of the Power Gem. Her plan, unfortunately, ended in her death but at least she freed herself from The Collector and destroyed much of his collection.

6 May Not Have Intended To Die

While it’s impossible to guess what Carina’s intentions were, there are those who believe that she did not intend her attack to be a suicide mission. In fact, the opposite might actually have been the case.

It’s quite likely that Carina just intended to use the power of the Infinity Stone to destroy The Collector. Like most people in attendance at that meeting, she didn’t know how powerful the Stone actually was and was destroyed by it.

5 Exists In The Comics

Like many details in the MCU, Carina exists in the comics. But like many of those same details, Carina’s character was modified quite a bit for the movies. Those adjustments did fit the plot, though. In Marvel Comics, she’s called Carina Tivan, or Carina Walter, and was The Collector’s daughter.

This might have been too much detail for the movie to go into and wasn’t particularly relevant to her character’s arc. Making her The Collector’s slave worked because it gave her attack on him better motivation.

4 Still Could Have Been The Collector’s Daughter

There are some MCU fans who have suggested that Carina may have still been The Collector’s daughter. As demonstrated by Rhomann Dey and his Krylorian family on Xandar, it was certainly possible for Krylorians to have families with members of other races.

It’s not out of the question for The Collector to have procreated with a Krylorian woman and had a daughter of his own. If that turned out to be the case, that would make the act of enslaving her even more horrifying.

3 Uncredited In Thor: The Dark World

The character of Carina only appears in two MCU films. Her main, and most substantial, appearance was in Guardians of the Galaxy. But Carina also appeared in a post-credits scene for Thor: The Dark World.

This scene introduced both Carina and The Collector to the MCU when the Asgardians questionably brought the Aether to him for safekeeping. Ophelia Lovibond’s appearance in this scene was uncredited, though.

2 Questioned Hiring Gamora

While you get everything you need to know from the movies, Marvel produced a comic to explain what happened between the post-credits scene for Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. It showed The Collector hiring Gamora to steal The Orb containing the Power Gem for him.

It also showed Carina questioning her master’s choice in hiring a daughter of Thanos and the most dangerous woman in the galaxy. Carina was probably right to be concerned but The Collector simply dismissed her as he always did.

1 Possibly Was First Named “Maverdevia”

Reputedly, naming the character “Carina” came long after the filming of her post-credits scene for Thor: The Dark World. There are rumors that indicate the character was originally named “Maverdevia” by the cameraman who helped shoot that scene.

If this was the case, the name didn’t stick as James Gunn went with Carina in the end. Still, it would have been a nice touch as it made reference to The Collector’s comic book daughter, and built a small connection to the character’s origins.
