Gamora is one of the fiercest and most interesting female characters in the MCU. She has a clear, complex story arc that has turned her from a misunderstood villain into a fan-favorite hero. After being raised by Thanos, she’s gone on an emotional journey to get away from his influence.

At the moment, it’s not even clear where in the cosmos Gamora is, but fans are still holding out hope that she is out there somewhere, and she’ll be reunited with the Guardians of the Galaxy, because those movies just wouldn’t seem the same without her. So, here are Gamora’s 10 Most Memorable Lines.

10 “If he ends up being evil, we’ll just kill him.”

This line acts as a brilliant form of foreshadowing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because it turns out to be exactly how the movie ends, but no one expects that when they first watch it. The Guardians have just met a walking, talking planet and he’s taking them back to his home.

Quill is reluctant to accept Ego as his biological father, but Gamora convinces him to at least give him a try, with the condition that if he turns out to be a villain, they can just kill him. He does, inevitably, turn out to be a villain and some hard sacrifices are made to kill him.

9 “Whatever nightmares the future holds, are dreams compared to what’s behind me.”

Just based on this line, the MCU should give us a whole Gamora solo movie set before she joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. She’s clearly been through a lot, evidenced by the fact that none of the death and destruction and warfare and betrayal that have happened in the movies we’ve seen her in haven’t made a dent in her emotional state.

Everything that happens from now on, she says, is a breezy walk in the park compared to what she’s already been through. These previous experiences – maybe just the most heartbreaking one – could make a cool, dark, exciting spin-off movie.

8 “Everything I hate about myself comes from you.”

While Avengers: Infinity War didn’t have a main character in the traditional sense, and focused on a giant ensemble cast in a sweeping epic narrative, Thanos took center stage as the tyrant behind all the mayhem unleashed on Earth’s mightiest heroes.

And if Thanos is the main character, then Gamora is close behind as the second most important character in that story, because she was taken from her homeworld by Thanos as a young child and raised as his daughter. In this line from a deleted scene from Infinity War, she tells the Mad Titan what a destructive impact he’s had on her life.

7 “Shoot her if she does anything suspicious. Or if you feel like it.”

This is what Gamora tells Rocket when she leaves Nebula under his guard. It’s early on in Vol. 2, before the two have come to terms with why they feel animosity towards each other and made up. Gamora and Nebula share one of the deepest emotional relationships in the whole MCU.

Their bond as sisters has been fractured by the fact that they were raised by an abusive and distant father, which adds a new layer of evil to an already-pretty-evil villain. Over the course of their arc, they’ve gone from utterly despising each other to sort-of loving each other.

6 “This is the one? Really?”

In the final battle of Avengers: Endgame, when the Gamora of 2014 decides to team up with the Nebula of 2023 and fight against Thanos, Star-Lord sees the love of his life for the first time since he found out she was dead.

He’s astounded that she’s alive and he tells her he thought he’d lost her. Gamora doesn’t recognize him, because in her time, she’s never actually met him. She ends up kicking him in the crotch when he goes to stroke her face, and she asks Nebula if he really is the human male she’s been developing a romantic relationship with.

5 “I have lived most of my life surrounded by my enemies. I would be grateful to die surrounded by my friends.”

Gamora wasn’t open to the idea of friends until she met her fellow cosmic warriors and they formed the Guardians of the Galaxy. Since most of the people she’d come across up to that point were her foes who either betrayed her or wanted to kill her from the beginning, she had built a shell around herself to stop her emotions from getting out.

At the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, as she realizes she might die trying to keep the Power Stone out of Ronan’s hands, she tells her new teammates that she doesn’t mind dying alongside them, because they’re her friends.

4 “Who put the sticks up their butts?”

Despite the fact that most of the alien creatures in the Marvel universe speak fluent English, Peter Quill still has a language barrier with most of the characters he converses with because they don’t understand his pop culture references or the idioms that people use on Earth.

When Quill is telling Gamora about the town in Footloose, where the adults don’t let the kids dance because they have “sticks up their butts,” Gamora takes him literally and thinks that someone went around actually putting sticks up the adults of Footloose’s butts. This kind of comedy has also defined Drax as a character.

3 “What if this man is your David Hasselhoff?”

One of the funniest running jokes in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is that their leader, Peter Quill, makes constant references to Earth’s popular culture, and the rest of the Guardians do their best to keep up.

Gamora doesn’t know what a movie is, or what a TV show is, or what an actor is, but that doesn’t stop her from listening to all of Quill’s “legends” from Earth and trying to communicate with him using the only language he understands. In this case, she reminds Quill that he spent his childhood telling the other kids his dad was David Hasselhoff, and suggests that Ego might be his real Hasselhoff.

2 “I am going to die surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy.”

When we first meet Gamora, she’s not really open to meeting new people or trusting anyone, because she’s been raised to look after herself and fight her own battles. She’s a lone wolf who can’t imagine joining a team. But then she finds that Quill, Rocket, Drax, and Groot can all offer her something she doesn’t have on her own, and over time, she’s willing to accept this team as her new family.

At first, she sees the four of them as the dumbest people she’s ever met, who it would be embarrassing to die with. By the end of the first movie, she’d be happy to die with them.

1 “We’re just like Kevin Bacon!”

Surprisingly, one of the most memorable and endearing scenes from the entire MCU has been the one in which Peter Quill tells Gamora about the legend of Kevin Bacon, who arrived at a town where no one was allowed to dance and introduced the townspeople to the joy of expression through dance.

The following movies were rife with references to Kevin Bacon, since he’s the guy that the rest of the Guardians have come to see as Earth’s greatest hero. When Quill met Peter Parker, he asked him if Footloose is still considered the greatest movie ever made, to which Peter replied that it never was.
