When it was released, many critics noted the substantial differences between Guardians of the Galaxy and many of the Marvel films that preceded it. Part of it was the film’s tone, which was markedly irreverent and significantly funnier than almost any film released by the studio.

An even bigger part, however, was the characters, all of whom somehow seemed more human, and thus more relatable, than their predecessors in the rest of the franchise. As it turns out, many of them also looked a lot like they did in the comics, which is not always the case.

10 Peter Quill

There’s no question that Chris Pratt brings all of his considerable charm to the role of Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord. He also happens to look a great deal like Quill is shown in many of the comics like having red hair and blue eyes. In order to prepare for the role, Pratt embarked on a well-publicized fitness regimen, bringing his body more in line with what we, and the comic-book world, see as suitable for a superhero.

9 Drax

One of the more fascinating, and hilarious, characters to appear in the film was Drax the Destroyer, played by Dave Bautista. In the comics, he began life as a man named Arthur Douglas, whose spirit was taken and put into an enormously strong, green body. In many of the comics, he is exceptionally tall. In the film, he keeps the character’s signature tattoos – though he’s not quite as tall as he is in the comics.

8 Rocket

Rocket was, arguably, one of the breakout characters of the Marvel universe. Part of this comes from the voice of Bradley Cooper, who remains charming even when he’s not on-screen. It’s also hard not to love a character that’s a talking raccoon.

The film version skews pretty close to how he’s portrayed in the comics, though in the movie he also has cybernetic enhancements that make him an even more fearsome and effective fighter.

7 Groot

It was probably inevitable that the character Groot, the talking tree, was fated to be a pop culture phenomenon. Just like you can’t help but love seeing an anthropomorphic animal, you also can’t help love a tree that talks. In his basic planty appearance, Groot looks like he does in the comics, though it should be pointed out that in many of his print iterations he looks more sinister than the version that we see on the screen.

6 Nebula

Nebula is one of the most fascinating characters to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy. More morally ambiguous than her adopted sister Gamora, she is also, in her own way, just as tragic. In many of the comics, she has a sort of outlandish appearance, with her form-fitting costume and long, black hair. In the film version, she is more androgynous, with no hair and parts of her body swapped with replacement parts by her sadistic father Thanos.

5 Mantis

Mantis has one of the most colorful biographies of any character in the Marvel universe, which is really saying something. Born in Vietnam, she eventually adopted many different identities in her various adventures.

Though she initially appeared in a stereotypical Oriental fashion, she eventually was depicted with her antennae, with which she appears in the film version. The film also paints her as being more innocent and naive than her counterpart in the comics.

4 Yondu

In the films, Yondu is Peter Quill’s adopted father, and he appears as the man who kidnapped Peter Quill. His loyalties remain a little murky until near the end of the second film. His appearance in the films largely matches those in the comics, with his signature blue skin and the fin sprouting from the back of his head. It is actually smaller in the first film, and when it is destroyed he has it replaced with a larger one that looks like the one in the comics.

3 Ego

Ego is, appropriately enough, a truly terrifying and self-absorbed figure within the universe of Guardians of the Galaxy. A living planet, he hatches a scheme by which he can make all planets an extension of his own identity.

Though in the comics he is almost always shown as a planet with a menacing face, in the second Guardians film he adopts a human guise, one that is handsome but that cannot entirely hide the darkness and evil in his heart.

2 Ronan The Accuser

As the central villain of the first Guardians film, Ronan is played with inimitable menace by none other than the great Lee Pace. His appearance closely matches with most of the comics in which he appears, with his signature cowl that obscures some of his face, the rest of which is marked by tattoos. He also bears with him his signature mace, which is a key part of his appearance in many of the comics.

1 Gamora

Throughout her time in the films, Gamora emerges as one of the MCU’s finest fighters. This makes sense, given that she is raised by Thanos, one of the most ruthless figures in the universe. Portrayed by Zoe Saldana, she appears as she does in many of the comics, with her signature green skin, long hair, and tremendous fighting abilities. As in the comics, she also develops a romance with Peter Quill/Star-Lord and has an antagonistic relationship with her sister Nebula.
