New concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 provides a look at early designs for original team members Krugarr & Martinex. One of the biggest surprises in the Marvel sequel was the inclusion of the original team, a set of obscure comic heroes totally different to the Guardians movie fans know.
Aside from Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Starhawk (Sylvester Stallone), the original Guardians featured in the movie are Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum), Mainframe (voiced by Miley Cyrus), Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), and Krugarr. Martinex was the crystal-like alien who accompanied Stallone’s character in many of his scenes, and Krugarr was the snake-like alien who appeared in one of the movie’s post-credits scenes. Now we can see how these two characters developed.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 artist Ian Joyner posted concept art on Art Station that shows what the characters looked like in the early stages. Check the artwork out in the gallery below.

In the comics books, Martinex was a Pluvian (alien from Pluto) with the ability to project heat and cold from his hands. He served as the leader of the original team for several years before turning over leadership to Vance Astro so that he could form another branch of the Guardians called the Galactic Guardians. Though the character’s history and role as a superhero has clearly changed for the movie (where he’s played by Rosenbaum), his appearance certainly resembles his comic book counterpart, whose skin was made out of silicon crystal. The only difference we can see between the early and final designs is that in the concept art Martinex’s crystals were sharper and more fractured.
As for Krugarr, the accuracy in how he was brought to life on the big screen is simply stunning. The character appeared in his full comic book glory, complete with the same red scaly skin, webbed ears, face, and snake-like body. The only thing noticeably different is the costume, and understandably so. Since the comic book version of the character is the Sorcerer Supreme, he’s usually shown wearing Doctor Strange’s Cloak of Levitation. However, that character exists in an alternate timeline set in the future, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes place in the present where Strange is still alive, which explains why the character’s Cloak of Levitation was replaced with armor.
